Re: 4x4 not working
First, open your door, open up the drivers side jump seat, and check the black box in there. There should be a white button on the top and a small red light. If the red light is NOT on, press the white button and hold it for a couple of seconds, and then release. It should flash a couple of times, and you should hear a click. Now, press the four wheel drive button and see if it engages.
If that doesn't work, I suggest replacing the buttons. Go to a local junk yard and buy a couple of sets from Rangers (I got like 4 or 5 sets, I just have no idea where they are at, otherwise I would just send them to ya). They should only cost you about 5 bucks a piece (or free if you have pockets). Take the dash apart, pop in a new set of switches, and test it out. I suggest cleaning the "new" ones with electronics cleaner spray from your local parts store.
If it STILL doesn't work, then you could have a problem with your transfer case or the selenoid with it.
It took me FOREVER to figure out what the problem was with mine a couple of years ago, and after replacing the box behind the jump seat and the t-case, I figured out it was the fucking switches.

No, it's not a fuse box. I don't have pictures and I'm sorry, but I'm far too lazy to go out and get them. Just open up the drivers side jump seat and you'll see it.
And they work great with the push button when the fucking push button fucking works! I have them on mine.

Re: 4x4 not working
The little seats in the back of the cab. Pull it out as if you're gonna sit in it. Make sure you pull the one on the driver's side. Then look for the thing he's talking about.

......The seat you sit in to drive the vehicle....... Behind that there is a jump seat, which you fold down to allow people to sit behind you in your extended cab pickup.

Re: 4x4 not working
Step one: Look at the drivers seat. It's the one in this picture:
Step two: Move drivers seat into upright position, shown in this photo:
Step three: Look at jump seat behind said drivers seat (in the rear passenger area), shown in this picture:
Step four: Open said jump seat into the out but closed position, shown in this picture:
Step five: Look at box behind said jump seat, shown in this picture:
Step six: press white button next to little red light on top shown in this picture:
and hold for up to 5 seconds (count them out ONE ONE THOUS AND, TWO ONE THOUS AND, THREE ONE THOUS AND, FOUR ONE THOUS AND, FIVE ONE THOUS AND) and release. It should flash a couple of times, you should hear a click, and it should stay on. I would take a video of this process for you, but the battery is out of the truck at the moment and I am not about to fucking work on the god damn piece of shit truck when it's 30 fucking degrees out and I'm in fucking shorts! GOD DAMNIT! YOU ALREADY GOT ME OFF MY FAT ASS ONCE, I'M NOT DOING IT AGAIN!!!!!
*EDIT*
End freak out was only a joke, but I'm serious. I'm not working on the damn truck until winter is over, lol.
----------
I also forgot to say that the box is probably mounted differently in your truck since it is slightly newer. If this process works, pressing the button on the dash should make the four wheel drive work. If not, try the other thing I said in my first post.

Re: 4x4 not working
And yes, I know the truck is dirty inside. Almost 3 years of sitting with no activity done in it (other then sitting in the drivers seat and making truck noises with my mouth) will do that.

Re: 4x4 not working
Dont forget the transfer case shift motor either, not just the transfer case. Okay all possibilites are as follows: 30A fuse under the hood, switch in dash, electronic shift module(little black box behind JUMP seat), Transfer case shift motor, wiring. IN THAT ORDER! (easiest to hardest)
