I don't know. I did it while the engine was running because obviously I'm not going to be able to tell if the four wheel drive is working or not if the truck is turned off and not moving.

What he said. Forgot about the fuse. And I forgot about the shift motor, lol.

Ok, that might be alright. It's been a couple of years since I did it last so I could be confusing other things that blink and click and have lights.

Until you can actually test the truck to see if the four wheel drive is working or not and then report back here, I have nothing else to really offer you, lol. All I can say is I know how frustrating it is, lol. Pretty shitty to spend $1200 prior to finding out that a $5 junk yard part fixed the damn thing.

Replaced the transfer case(twice because I used a junk yard one, and then had a shop install a remanufactured one), I already had the hubs replaced, so I took them apart and made sure they were fine, and I had the wiring harness and that black box replaced as well.

And like I said, it was a while ago that I did it so I can't remember if the light did actually stay on or not. I seem to remember it did, so Now that I think about it, that light may stay constant when the four wheel drive is actually engaged and may go out when it's not. If I wasn't such a lazy bastard, I could have tested this for you last night, but alas the truck has been broken down for a couple of years.

well that didnt fix the problem but you can definately feel it kick in you know the "clunk" sound....but the front tires dont spin...so im not sure what it could be....but a quick question how do you convert auto 4x4 to manual? or would it be an easier cheaper rout to fix the auto 4x4?

Find the rare and pricey BW1345Manual and then put some lock-outs in....Its most definitely your hubs that are kicked. Have someone look under the truck while its in "4x4" and see if the front yoke on the diff is spinning...if it is, it's your hubs

I wouldn't worry about getting the manual transfer case since you aren't that mechanically inclined (requires a lot of effort to put it in).

I would just get some manual locking hubs.

They look expensive, but it's a lot cheaper then fixing your auto's (if that's really your problem).
Here's a little how to on installing them:

Took me 10 minutes per side...And btw, the lockouts are on sale right now on Summitracing.com for $80...I then went onto broncograveyard.com to get the conversion kit...that was only $20+shipping so for around $110 I got lockouts

Okay heres what you can do to narrow down the problem to the transfer case or the hubs.

1. Jack up the front and put it on jackstands.
2. Jack up the back and put it on jackstands.
3. Make sure all wheels are at least 4 inches off the ground.
4. Start your truck.
5. Push the 4X4 button to engage the 4x4.
6. Put it in drive and give it a little gas.
7. Get out and go up to the front of the vehicle while its in drive and the wheels are spinning.
8. Look under the front of your truck right between the wheel and the engine.
9. You should see a little shaft spinning, pointing towards the wheel.
10. If there is a shaft spinning than the problem is your hubs (Cheap Fix)
11. If the shaft is not spinning then the problem is your transfer case (Not Cheap Fix)
12. Put it in park, and let the vehicle down.
And your done.

If it is your hubs search ebay for "manual hubs" for a "1994 Ranger"

Pushbutton means that the transfer case automatically engages gears so the front driveshaft can spin...Auto hubs lock when the axle shafts start spinning, they will grab hold and have the 4x4...They have little plastic cams in them...They're hard to explain how they work...Manual hubs on the other hand, lock them in to lock them to the axleshafts...unlock them so they arents locked to the axle shafts...dont know if you can understand this or not, but I thought I'd give it a shot

If you go back to the first page, you will see my reply to your first question: They work fine. I also have manual hubs and a push button transfer case and the only problem I had was the buttons. Auto hubs suck, get manuals. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to get out and lock them in every time you need to use four wheel drive, but it's a lot better then being stuck in the situation that you're in. Even if your hubs are working properly, I would still switch to the manuals.

ok so if i get manual lockouts that bypasses the "vacum" because i heard that is a huge problem with auto 4x4....and how much dose an average set cost from say auto zone? and how much time dose it take the average mechanic to install them?
