5r55e, but no 5th gear? help is appreciated!
1997 ranger just took to the tranny shop to have code read, he said i need a new torque converter, which i figured, the tc code showed up, etc. i always thought i had a 4 speed tranny becasue i only felt 4 shifts, but the code reader said i have a 5r55e, i do like 3k at 70 mph on the freeway with 3.45 gears, and stock tires, so i guessing 5th gear isnt engaging? or the tc inst locking up?
give me you opinions on this. thanks!

well... you start in 1st...
then shift 4 times to get to 5th...
Starting out in 1st gear,
shift #1
2nd gear,
shift #2
3rd gear,
shift #3
4th gear,
shift #4
5th gear ...
4 shifts gets 5-gears... yes ?

okay so when you put the truck into drive that counts as a gear?
heres how it goes when im driving.
put in drive, 1st shift, 2nd shift, 3rd shift, then the final 4th
but the truck does 3k at 70 which bugs me lol most people say 2500 is normal for that speed?

What was the code? What the trans shop/scanner says doesn't mean shit at all with these transmissions. The Ranger transmissions are extremely finicky, and the trans techs aren't trained to deal with this trans specifically. What does matter is the symptoms you experience with the truck.

i lost the paper the code was written down on, he drove the truck with the scanner, and only one tranny code was shown, the truck VERY rarley slips, and its a daily driver, after i replaced the valve body it made it better, but after driving for a bit it has the hard shift symptoms from 1-2nd. im pretty sure its the TC.

hmmm, I was going to say its probably a valve body, VB gasket, or separator plate problem. but it looks like you've got that covered. converter sounds like a legitimate suspect, since 5th is usually unaffected by valve body problems. does the overdrive on/off button do anything?

yeah the o/d button works, i think i pin pointed the problem, i has gps on to check my actual speed because i re geared the truck from 3.73s to 3.45s, and the tires a a little smaller than stock, the spedo was off about 4-5 mph, so when i said i was doing 3k at 70, im actually doing 3k at 75mph which sounds right.
