Default Hubs staying locked in?

How do i tell if the front hubs on my truck are staying locked in. Its a 2001 4.0L with 162000. The 4x4 disengages, but it almost feels like the hubs are still locked in. How much would this drop the gas mileage if they are stuck locked in?

you don't have locking hubs in you're 01, its equipped with a live axle meaning the front axle and drive shaft is always engaged, the only thing that locks and unlocks when you shift in and out of 4x4 is the transfer case.
