I am running a 29" tire with 3.73 which is 2800 rpm, even with 33's your above 3k kinda high. This chart reflects a 1:1 gear ratio. For 5spd manuals youd have to X by .79/.84..? to get final drive. I think auto's are 1:1

I run 32" tires (metric) with 4:10s and the 4.0L and I have decent mileage (16 city/20 hwy) and she's real quick off the line. It's all about balance. If you ran 4:10s on 35s you'd have decent performance all around and get 13/18. That's assuming the 4.0L.

Edit: Yea, bigger tires lower your highway revs.

autos have OD just like the manuals and auto's are .75

no you wont 35's will give you terrible freeway mileage because you wont be able to use OD i kick out of OD everytime i look at a hill with 4.10s and 33s with 31s i did fine

it saves gas. OD off for towing OD makes no difference offroading i have never had it go into overdrive while i was offroad.

OD (Overdrive) is just another gear. It's called overdrive cause it's beyond the 1:1 engine/tire speed or "direct drive". On modern 5-speed rangers 4th is Direct Drive and 5th is Overdrive (.75 or so). I have a friend that runs the setup I said and gets the numbers I said, I'm not pulling it out of my ass.

You'll get better MPG with bigger tires on the highway cause it kinda increase your overdrive ability cause every revolution of the tire gets you farther down the road when you pass 1:1, but it'll lower your city (under 1:1) MPG.

Oh, and if your SOHC with 4:10s struggles with 35s in OD, rebuild/ replace your motor cause it ain't workin right.

i call BS seeing how everyone else i have brought 35"s up to has agreed. its not .75 or so it is .75 that is Fords spec for the 5R55 that comes in my truck. seeing how my SOHC has 70K on it and still dynos at 170RWHP it really doesn't sound like its lost any power. Most auto rangers die in OD on the freeway with 35s

So youre telling me that you've never met anyone with a modern ranger 4x4, 4.0, running 4.10s and 35s who can run 5th gear? I know 3.

Now if you're talking automatics (I was talking 5 speed manuals) It depends what transmission they're running. The 4R55E came in the 95-01s and that is a 4-speed (3-speed w/OD), the transmission code on the VIN would be "T". The 5R55E came 97-Current and that's a 5-speed (4 w/ OD), transmission code "D". Both have a .75 OD.

I bring that up because the 5-speed manual on the 2001-current Rangers carry a 4 speed with OD, but unlike the autos, it carries a .79 OD, thus easier to run powerwise. It's possible that you could run 35s on a manual easier then an auto, plus I personaly had an 03 ranger 4.0 with an auto and it never liked OD even with stock tires.

Not being argumentitive, just gleaning accurate facts.

no mine ran them but with an auto it is not happy. i have one its weird. i know what transmission is in it i also know the OD ratio thats why i posted them. 95 to 01 you also had the option of the 4R44 when using the 3.0 little bit weaker of a trans. the 4R55 was matched with the 4.0 and was just an electric A4LD. all of these were crap. the 5R55 is a bit better. again trucks with the 3.0 carry the 5r44. Also to be very specific 97-02 the 5R55E was used and rangers 02 and up carry a 5R55W.

gear ratio on the 5R55W is quite a bit different

5R55W
1st 3.22
2nd 2.41
3rd 1.55
4th 1.00
5th .75

5R55E

1st 2.47
2nd 1.87
3rd 1.47
4th 1.00
5th .75

M50D-R1HD
1st 3.40
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.31
4th 1.00
5th 0.79

gearing is way the hell easier to push 35s using a manual.

left side is the 5r55W right side is M50D-R1

pics worth a thousand words in OD my truck sits around 2200RPM which is not way low to spin those tires thats why i say no go 4.10s for my truck and why if you read my sig i have 4.88s
