the numbers are the affected gear ratio. so a 3.22 ratio with say a 3.73 rear end gives you a drive ratio of 12.01. So it would be like having a 12.01 ring and pinion.

Final drives.

1st - 12.01
2nd - 8.98
3rd - 5.78
4th - 3.73
5th - 2.79

The lower the number, the closer the drive wheel speed is to the engine speed up to 1:1. After that the wheels are turning faster than the engine.

Also to be very specific 97-02 the 5R55E was used and rangers 02 and up carry a 5R55W.

gear ratio on the 5R55W is quite a bit different

5R55W
1st 3.22
2nd 2.41
3rd 1.55
4th 1.00
5th .75

5R55E

1st 2.47
2nd 1.87
3rd 1.47
4th 1.00
5th .75

M50D-R1HD
1st 3.40
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.31
4th 1.00
5th 0.79

gearing is way the hell easier to push 35s using a manual.

left side is the 5r55W right side is M50D-R1

pics worth a thousand words in OD my truck sits around 2200RPM which is not way low to spin those tires thats why i say no go 4.10s for my truck and why if you read my sig i have 4.88s
Correct across the board. There are so many variables that have to be considered when working on automobiles. You sir, are well educated.

lol thanks and i know mine can run 35s however i loose all acceleration the truck has to downshift for everything. also in 4Hi offroad the truck could not do hills. had to go into 4lo which was crap for the kind of hill.

Not to hi-jack the thread but maybe you two could help me out. I have 3.73s with 31" tires right now. I'm getting ready to buy 33's. Would 4.10 get me back to my final drive ratio (or close to)? I have a 2008 4.0 4x4 5 speed.

The lower you go (higher numaricly) the more acceleration you have but you raise your revs and lose top end.

So basically, I'd say 4.10s. That's my opinion.

ok. now heres another gearing question. im gettin a 89 f150 and ima go up to 33x12.5 mt's. its got 3.55 gears. now would i have to regear so i dont lose acceleration? we got a 90 f150 5.0L with 3.55 gears and 35x12.5 on it, and even if i mash it from 50mph, the speedo will slowly creep up, so thats why im thinkin of whether or not its worth it to pay for gears

Gears don't affect the torque of the motor, it's affects how it's delivered.
