Default '93 4.0, 4x4 issue... no dash lights at start up

I'm buying another ranger, this time with a bigger engine and 4wd. I'm getting it cheap because the 4wd isn't working. The seller tells me it's the shift motor seized up, but there aren't any lights on the dash...ever. It's a push button module, and he did replace it...nothing happened. And the tranny is auto. It's a 1993 4.o v6 4x4. Anyone have suggestions on where to start?

----------

I haven't had a chance to mess with it much, it's been in the shop having the front end repaired. I just need to know a few good places to start my diagnosis.

The transfer case motor is a known weak point for 93's. If the motor is seized, then its seized. You can try a few good whacks on the drive motor case with a hammer which may temporarily break it loose.

You won't get any dash lights to come on if the motor is seized, because the lights are wired to come on after the 4x4 is engaged. No 4x4, no lights.

You can rebuild the trans-case motor for about $150 and a day of meticulous labor.

O K ............Its a long shot but try this: You don't say if you have ext cap but if you do and you have the jump seats pull the drivers side one out about half way and look behind and below it. There will be a metal box with a red LED and a shrouded square white switch on top. Turn the key on and reach down and push the white switch.(It won't have very much travel) the red LED should illuminate. If it does, push the 4x4 switch. If you hear a bunch of whirring and clicking, let it finish then start the truck and try the 4X4 switch. If its no luck then try the procedure with the truck running. If you have a reg cab or no jump seats then you'll have to pull off interior panels to try this. What you are doing is resetting the 4X4 brainbox and it has worked for me about 45% of the times I have tried it! I wish you luck. brother!!

sweet!! thanks, I don't have ext cab but the brain box still sits right behind driver seat, I'll try that first.
