Default 4x4 Not Disengaging on 2001 4.0L

I just bought a 2001 4.0L 4x4 Ranger with 160000 miles on it. when i went to look at the truck it seemed like the 4x4 wasnt working. when i went to pick the truck up later that night the 4wd was working, but it will not disengage. there is no light on the dash indicating that it is on, but you can feel it when you turn. The owner said he just switched it into 4Hi and it worked, but i cant get it to disengage. The truck had been sitting for a couple of months, and the transmission has been rebuilt. I need help!!!

Stop. Place it in Neutral. Foot on the brake. Switch out of 4wd and see if it works. You shouldn't have to do that between 2hi and 4hi. Usually the problem is the electric shift motor on the T-Case. Tap on it with a tire iron, sometimes it will go.

i have tryed putting it in nuetral and switching it to 2hi. what confuses me is there is no 4x4 light on on the instrument cluster. i checked and the bulbs are good. I also tryed tapping on the electric motor, still no good.

I don't own one of these. I have never worked on one,,,,,but could it be the fuse?........I think the 2001 have a live axle, so basically you have the 4x4 switch/button and the shift motor right?....can you test for power at the shift motor?

The 2001 should have a live axle set up, so there are fewer things that it could be....You have the switch on the dash, the electronic shift module under drivers kick panel, and the electronic shift motor on the transfer case. Check fuse first. THen take off the little shift motor on the transfer case have someone change the dial in the cab and see if the motor moves if it does then its the transfer case its self. If it doesnt move then its the motor, module or switch.

----------

IF it is a manual shift transfer case then it could be the linkage needing adjusted, i can explain but its a little complicated.
