Default 4WD Problems.....sometimes!!

Have a 98 Ranger 4X4 ext cab V6, 155,000 and I am having probs with the 4WD. About a year and a half ago, i brought it in cuz the 4x wasn't working at all. He said the main component was shot and replaced it - worked great for a while.

The problem I have now is this: When I get it in 4WD and I KNOW it's in it works great. But when I turn the switch on the dash to off, and then have to turn it back on, sometimes it doesn't engage right away. I'll get stuck in the snow with the 4X ON, and I'll be told my front isn't spinning. OR...if i am in 2WD and get stuck and switch to 4WD, it won't kick in right away...it's quirky and hard to 'splain.

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm a disabled vet living on the Iron range of MN, and I NEED that 4WD..anyone up in this area who could look at at?

Jim

I have the same issue. I'm just starting to try and figure it out. Right now my best bet is an electrical problem with the switch, I've got other electrical 'gremlins', like my dome light that goes on whenever..

OK...thisis eerie. I have the same dome light issue! This is nothing less than weird!! Look, I know you have bigger issues than worryiing about me, but I live down a 4 mile logging road in northern MN, so I live and die by that 4WD. Can I HUMBLY ask you to let me know if you diagnose your issue? I'd put money on it being the same problem!

And if, by chance, I get an answer from someone, I'll let YOU know!

pull the electric shift motor out and there is a plastic washer behind it the washer will have a very worn out spot on it turn the washer and put it all back together

My '02 XLT 4x4 Off Road will sometimes engage in 4x4 and sometimes it wont. What I mean by this is when I turn the switch in to 4x4 High or Low, it will click and the light on the dash will show up and it WILL be in 4x4 and sometimes when I turn the switch in to 4x4 High or Low, it will NOT click and the light will not show up and it DOES NOT go in to 4wd. I replaced the 4x4 Control Module (the box the "clicks" when the truck engages) a couple months ago and it work perfectly fine for about 3 months and this started up again. Ive been getting so frustrated with it because I just can't pin point what the issue is. I've gone to 4 Ford Dealerships to try to get a mechanic to give me an idea and they all said it could be anything, the only way to find it is to run a diagnostics test on it for $68.....Is this the same problem your talking about?

Ok guys, I called the Ford Dealership here in missoula. He said its the following because they have had a lot of problems. I have a 1999 that doest hte same thing as all you guys are having.

Before I go on....DVet, I am a serviceman getting ready to coem home from Iraq, thanks to guys like you I'm here in the first place.

The problem is this: The 4x4 on these electronic Shift on the Fly shifters is that it runs off of a vacuum line. That line tends to get little pinholes and it will cause the transfer case to say that the 4x4 is engaged when the hubs are not. If I remember rightly as to what he said. The vacuum line is on the passenger side of the truck and needs to be replaced, sadly its kind of an expensive part but it will solve the problems. There is no recall for it but I got the part, had it installed. Just gotta see if the 4x4 is working when I get home(will take the truck out for a little baha stunt).
