Default 2wd rear axle in a 4wd truck?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and am more of a vw and bmw guy, but my friend/roomate has a 99 ranger 3.0v6 4wd that basically exploded the rear diff a few days ago. I pulled the diff cover and collected all of the broken gears and chunks of metal

I found a 2000 2wd 4cyl ranger being parted out locally and was trying to determine if you can put a 2wd rear axle into a 4wd truck or are they different size/lug pattern/drive sharft bolt pattern etc. Just thinking it will be easier to replace the entire axle as a unit than try to get that diff out because it will not budge.

Sorry if this question has been answered before, I tried a quick search but could only come up with 2wd to 4wd conversions.

Thanks in advance!

The gears need to be the same as what is up in the front.

if the front has 4.10 gears you need 4.10 gears in the back.

Thank you, I thought about that after I posted and went ahead and printed the rear axle ID list from the sticky, and will check with the seller to find out which one he has. But regarding everything else (neglecting the gear ratio) the 2wd and 4wd rear axles and hubs are the same?

Thank you for the answers and quick response! This has been kind of a rush deal since he only has a motorcycle to commute to the FD and now his bike is taking a dive. Just wanted to get all the info before I swaped them out.

Thanks again!

Ps if a Mod sees this you can close the thread.

Yes it is the f6 axle 7.5 with 373 gears and LSD. Still waiting on a call from the seller, but as long as the gearing is the same he's not to worried about the LSD. Just need to get it back on the road.

just an update, the seller's axle is code 86 which is the open 373 7.5" picking it up and throwing it in this weekend. He is also leaving the brake components and u-bolts/plates attached so I'm thinking it's a pretty good deal for 2 bills.

thanks again for the info/help.
