Default 4x4 low dash light

2000 Ranger XLT Super Cab 4x4

When engaging 4x4 high, I hear a click and the dash light comes on.

When engaging 4x4 low, there is no click and the dash light does not come on.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

I've heard of the knob for the 4x4 system in Rangers going faulty in little time, could be the culprit.

Does it go into 4 low, and just not show it on the dash? I don't own a 4x4 but do you have to be in neutral to engage 4 low? If you're doing everything right, and its not working, my guess would be the relay.

A valid point, but the ranger is shift on the fly I believe and I think you don't need to put it in neutral, But this assumption not fact.

to put it in 4low you have to be in nuetral with your foot on the brake or else it wont shift. you can switch into 4high up to 45mph but to get into 4low you have to be in neutral to do it.

Yes, my foot is on the brake and it's in neutral when engaging 4x4 low. I will test it in some gravel to see if 4x4 low is engaging, but I think it is. The dash light does not come one and there is no "click" like I hear on 4x4 high.

OK, more info.......
After testing it in gravel, it seems to be in 4x4 high, even though the selector knob is on 4x4 low. Still no dash indicator light in low and still no "click" in low. Dash indicator light and "click" in high work fine.

Also, when starting the truck, neither the 4x4 high or 4x4 low indicator lights come on momentarily like the manual says it should.

Any idea why it does not engage 4x4 low?

Thanks, Steve

i have an 05 FX level II ranger and the same thing is happening....4 high works perfectly and i have tried over and over to get it to engage into 4 low but the truck itself doesnt go into it and the light doesnt go on....so you're saying put it in reverse a couple times and then abck into neutral and then try to get it to engage?

Yup. cause last snow fall i needed it. i dont use my 4wheel drive often. it did the same thing. idk y. the truck would go into four high no problem. i tried tried. my dad has F250 powerstroke. before he put warn lockers on it. he would have to back it up sometimes for it to engage the 4wheel. so i tried it. took it a few times and it all of suddn workd. idk y it did. but thats what i did. cud just be freak. but it workd. it wouldnt go in till i did. sometimes it works fine and goes right in.

Could just be the cold weather. but it works for some reasen when i do that.

----------

oh make sure the truck is in neutral and hold down the brake. it does take it a few secs too. but idk y the damn thing does it. its weird. but hell it works for me lol. i know if it is cold it does take mine just a lil longer ot engage.
