Exclamation Transfer case Help!

My grandmothers 1999 Ranger has an automatic transfer case. I believe the switch on it is broken.

I switch it to 4x4 high and low (seperate times)
Put it in neutral, reverse drive. Try to give it gas in all of those directions. And nothing happens.

is it possible to put it into 4wd another way or does it just have to be replaced?

Worst time ffor it to go out when theres a foot of snow blocking us in.

Can you hear anything that sounds like it is locking in? If you turn the switch and it doesnt sound like it is locking in or it doesnt do anything at all then it is probably the switch.
