Unhappy noisy manual transmission

For some reason my transmission is making a lot of noise. When my clutch is NOT engaged, theres a whining noise almost sounds like gears spinning but with no oil but when i push the clutch pedal down, the noise disappears. I think thi may be the t/o bearing Then when I drive, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th whine but 4th doesn't at all and while driving, a chattering noise also happens but at random times. Idk what the problem may be cuz the tranny shifts smooth and drives great, just noisy.

needs advice bad, Thanks

more than likely a countershaft bearing if 4th doesnt whine.
4th gear is 1:1, and does not place any load on the countershaft

i was told when i bought it that he replaced the clutch, but im starting to doubt it. I think it may be the input shaft bearing as well. I love the truck, but this noisy transmission brings everything down.

My brothers truck has the same exact problem! Have you had a chance to take it apart and determine which bearing it actually is? I would appreciate any info to get an idea of what we'll be getting into when we decide to fix it. Thanks!

Holy ancient thread....I know but I was using the search function.....anyone able to follow up on these ideas? I'm having the exact issue trans has 236k on it but the clutch, flywheel, have less than 6k on it (new throwout, slave, and pilot bearing) and the fluid is new and topped off. But to restate the problem clutch on the floor no noise, when cruising at low speeds it makes the growly gear noise I do want to check and see if it is doing it 4th as it is a direct drive. Looking for other ideas though as to what this noise is.....I'm guessing its a bearing somewhere but I don't know where.....would love Amy ideas

I ended up getting new brass and bearings? from AAMCO. After that it sounded perfect and still does.

Did that involve a rebuild, or did you do it yourself, what were your approximate costs involved in that ??
