Default Help! what is this part???

Sorry if this is a stupid ?. 98 xlt 4x4 stock. I tracked down a grinding noise to this part and I don't know what it is. I lifted the wheels off the ground and spin them and this part just sits on the hub (i think?) its like it isnt in there all the way. Also I am getting the Superlift kit for this truck and am wondering if this comes in the kit or do I need to get this replaced first. hopefully you can see the picture (computers hate me). any help would be awesome. thanx

That's your CV joint. Your axle. If it's hitting the knuckle then your hub (knuckle) bearings are bad or the CV nut (32mm) has come loose and it's likely the bearings are toast after that. They have to replaced as an assembly by most people. At least $110 at the minimum. It's pretty easy to replace.

It's one of these parts, depending on if you have ABS or not..

OR it could be your CV itself is going bad. Does it have any play in it if you grab the rusty part to the right side of the black rubber boot and the shaft part on the left side of the rubber boot and try to wiggle it?

----------

EDIT: This thread shows you everything you need to know. It's not as bad as it looks.

Thanx for the info mojo.
when i move the part to the right of the boot it moves, a lot, in and out and all around. on the left side when i move it just the boot part and everything to the right moves. I think I am just going to replace them myself anywayz. The place putting on my lift is already stealing my cash so I will give it a try after i get the lift. how hard is it to replace the cv?
anywayz thanx again mojo, u saved my ass and my wallet. i owe u 1.

shit is too easy man. once u get the 32 nut off and then the hub bearing off and it pulls right out of the front diff. it willgive you a little trouble trying to pull because it has a clip inside holding it in but put a pry bar on it and you will get get no problem bro. good luck and let me kno if you got any questions on the tear down

Que? Contradictory statements dude. If the CV axle has a clip holding it in, then the clip will need to be removed first.

OP, the job is easy, but it's kind of time consuming, especially when you're trying to get the bolts on the back of the knuckle.

the clip is on the cv axle. its shaped like a c and sits in a groove. you do not remove the clip it stays on the cv. it is just a spring clip.

Before you go buying parts, I forgot to mention one thing. Jack the truck up on that corner. Enough so the tire is in the air. Try wiggling the tire up and down and left to right.

You can have somebody else do the wiggling while you watch from behind the tire, but if you do that, PLEASE use jackstands to support the truck. That'll show you what's worn out.

lol, that's better. You weren't clear on where the c-clip was. Sometimes C-Clips are used to hold axles inside the differential, and a prybar will do more damage then good.

mojo,
I lifted the wheel and there is no wiggle side 2 side or top 2 bottom. when i spin the wheel the cv axle doesnt spin. it looks like its just sitting there, but not in the hub all the way. I have the weekend off so i am going to work on it then. I will take the wheel and hub off and take a few pictures and post them before i buy anything. thanx again everyone.

I'm not too familiar with the newer 4x4 CV setups, but I don't think your CV axle should be spinning when the 4x4 isn't engaged. So that's normal.

So I got called in to work so I really didnt have time to do anything. I did take off the plastic cap from the hub. this is what it looks like. It is all dry and rusted looking inside. i thought there would be grease in there. when i put my finger in there i can move all the little gear rings, they feel loose. I dont know if this is normal or not.

Yeah, I believe you have the vacuum operated disconnects.. I'm not terribly familiar with that setup as mine is a live axle. They're not terribly different but they're not the same either.

I'd just pull the wheel off and start investigating. Something's definitely knackered seeing how everything is so dry and rusted in there. If the wheel didn't move when you had it jacked up then the hub should be good, so that's good news, maybe. It's something in that vacuum hub system that's worn out I'd say..

Just take it apart when you get time and if you get stumped then post up pics and someone here will help you I'm sure. I'll try my best..

Additionally, now may be a good time to convert your truck over to manual hubs just to do away with that crappy pulse vacuum system, but I have read reports that your MPG will go down after the conversion if you leave your hubs locked alot. Even with the 4x4 switch set to 2x.. Probably no worse than my live axle truck though. It sounds like it could get pretty expensive though..??

There's some good reading here. Take your pick.

Thanx mojo and everyone that helped out. I read up on the hubs and decided to do an axle swap to live axles. in the mean time i just pulled the little metal pins out of the hubs to bypass the vacuum system (i cant believe they are plastic!) not to worried about mpg's since i have a short ride to work. getting my big boy tires this week. pics coming soon.thanx everyone.
