2 Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive

I have a 1992 3.0 2wd ford ranger. I love the truck, but the only thing it is missing is 4x4. I know that the conversion is a real pain, and its easier to go on and buy a 4x4 truck. However, the only thing that really makes me question taking on the project is the front crossmember on the 2wd. I've been reading thread after thread on how people say that you need to take it out, and it is welded and rivited in. I guess the first question is, is i were to do an SAS setup for my 4x4 would it still be a problem? Also, how does the 2wd crossmember differ from the 4wd? ( i cant find any pictures of them) I appreciate your input.

No the crossmember shouldnt be a prob for a SAS.

Thanks alot, now the next question is it pretty simple to convert my steering to crossover steering? Also, does anyone know where i can get a 1992 3.0L ranger 4x4 tranny and Tcase online for a good price, or a local places that usually have good deals?

Inorder to do a cross over steering/ high steer it is simple all you need to do is find the Dana 44 knuckles that are "flat top" (they are flat on the top) or you can have your reg ones milled down and drilled for it. Here is a kit-> http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/new...uct.php?id=173
(one of many that can be bought or you can get the top plate and make your own)

As for the other question this is your best bet looks at all local JY and stuff-> http://www.car-part.com/

Sde note- What axles are you planning on running?

Dana 44s off of a 73-79 ford bronco. I was told they would fit best. I wouldnt mind going with a lighter Dana though.

Me and a member (my buddy Brent) on here got one off of a 93 Jeep Cherokee for my truck. It's a Dana 30. As long as you don't run a tire size bigger than a 37inch you'll be fine.

Yeah im shooting to tuck 35's under it. Do you think a Dana 44 is overkill?

Ehh.... You need to get intouch with Sandman. He knows more than I do. I emailed him your thread. Hopefully he'll make his ass useful and post.

Cross members is not the problem for converting over to TTB 4x4. Its the axle pivot mounts that are different. I was going to do this to a 93 ranger. It would be alot easier to SAS tho, unless you have a donor truck with the TTB.

I guess it all depends on what you want. If it were me, I would look at selling the 92. And buy a 95+ 4x4 with the 4.0.

I have never messed around with SAS a ranger, I did it to my jeep comanche I had back in the day, but that already had a Straight Axle in the front even tho it was 2wd.

The thing to consider is, is the truck worth the time and effort you are going to put into it converting it over to 4x4...? with it being older and having the 3.slow in it.

Re: 2 Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive

Yea, i understand. Well this isnt going to be my daily driver so it is easy for me to use it as a project truck because: 1) i already have it 2) i have plenty of time. I dont have to meet the same deadlines as a weekend warrior working on thier daily driver.

No a 44 is not overkill at all, remember though if you use the bronco front also use the rear. You can get a Rubi 44 or a waggy 44 and keep your rearend that way it the same width all around.

Re: 2 Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive

wouldnt the gear ratios be different though?

Re: 2 Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive

Gear for what if you use a waggy or Rubi? You are going to have to regear with any axle you use unless you get a matching set front and rear to swap in
