Default 7.5" axle question

I've got a 2000 2.5L 5 spd extended cab xlt that has the axle code 87 or open 7.5" 4:10 gears. Is this axle so small that i should upgrade it before considering body lift/ 31-32" tires? Is there a major significance between these axle sizes.

It wouldn't hurt to upgrade to a 8.8"
