Default auto trans rough shifting

i've noticed as of late, that my tranny is shifting rather rough. I really notice it when I am maintaining a constant speed through town, bout 35-40, it seems that the tranny stutters a bit. If I push on the gas, or let off the pedal slightly, it stops. Most times it's subtle, but once it a while, it's a bit of a jolt. I took it to be looked at, the mechanic replaced a couple of lines that were leaking a bit, and ordered a new seal, as it is leaking slightly also, but I didn't ever lose enough fluid to have to add any. Could that be the problem? I've also noticed at the same time that this started, I was getting a great deal of growl from under the hood when I accelerate, like I have a crack in my exhaust manifold, but I sure can't find one. Could this be related, and what the heck is it? I live in a small town, and don't have a lot of choices when it comes to auto diagnostics/repair.

Does it jolt a bit switching from park to drive or from drive to reverse. There could be a little play in your universal joint. Mine is doing the same thing and im pretty sure thats what my problem is. No noise or anything i just notice it when switching from P to D or D to R. and i notice sometimes between 2nd and 3rd. But im no mechanic, just something else to look check. Good Luck

its an 01 ranger edge with the 4.0 sohc. 120k. the o/d light did flash on and off one time, several weeks ago, but hasn't done it since. o/d button didn't have any effect either. I don't notice a whole lot of jump when I change from p to d, or visa versa,.. it's about the same as always.

Does it do it consistently, or just once in a while?

it doesn't jerk when i am accelerating or braking, although i have noticed a little bit of lag as of late, when i accelerate, before it engages (like it has to think about it for a second) but it does jerk randomly, when maintaining speed around the 35mph range, almost all the time.
