Anything that will fit without having to do any modification to attach it. Rear diffs are the same in 2x4 and 4x4 for a given year or years.
As far as ratio goes, we need to know what tires you intend to go to.

A good swap would be an expy axle with an LSD in it already. Higher spline count, usually 4.10 and you get disc brakes! Other than that, just search ebay for posi or limited slip for your size axle. Can usually find a refurb out of another ford to put in.

The problem with the Explorer swap in, is that the Explorer doesn't have shock mounts on the tubes, the spring perches need to be moved.
The plus is the disc brakes on the later models, 31 spline axles that I have been led to believe are thicker.

31 spline. And yes, the spring perches would have to be welded up top.

Remember too, that the shock mounts are located different in an Explorer.
The 92 I have dismantled to put in my B2 are part of the spring mount, (that is not the correct name, but it sandwiches the spring to the perch with 2 U-bolts).
On all other Explorers I have seen up to 97 or so, the shock mounts are on the rear of the diff, while the Ranger/B2 are one on each side of the tube.
I am planning to get a Ranger diff housing and swapping the guts from the Explorer diff into it rather than moving and/or making new mounts.

ok that helps me out a lot and also would it be smart to put a mini spool or a full spool in my 3.73 rear end

Personally, I would stick with a limited slip.
Reason being, L/S is way more friendly toward the front end. A spool has no slippage in the diff, when you turn it tries to keep pushing you in a straight line creating a huge strain on the tires and front end components, where as a L/S will allow one tire to turn faster than the other during the turn reducing this strain.
If you only plan to drag race this vehicle on the weekends, a spool is the way to go, otherwise get a limited slip.
While we are on this subject, 31 spline Explorer vs. 27 spline Ranger diffs. For many years we got along just fine with the lesser spline count in every vehicle except those that put out tremendous hp/torque. Some of the older rear ends had spline counts down in the teens with axles of 1 1/2 inches and larger. If you aren't planning on putting a huge amount of power against this rear end, don't worry about what the axle spline count might be, just worry about whether you can get replacement axles if the need should ever arise.
Frequenting the ASY's has shown that a lot of axles on one side of Explorers and others with 31 spline are missing from rear ends, how ever, Rangers don't seem to have this problem. That really kind of makes one wonder.
Now I have created another controversy.
If some one is interested in carrying this further than what the original thread started out to be, CREATE A NEW THREAD. "Spline Count"

Do you have any buildin skills, ie welder, torches, etc?
If you are wantin to lower the rearend, the Explorer swap drops the azzend 4" and you just have to make a shock mount crossmember.
Mine on the RAT Ranger:
If you are wantin to keep the original setup, then you can find 8.8 in later model Rangers or 7.5 L/S from Bronco II or some 4X4 Rangers.
Here's a link for info:
Ford Ranger Axles - The Ranger Station
Good luck whatever you decide!

i don't know what ya'll are yacking about the explorer swaps. its REALLY EASY! just go to sears, they've got a level that measures it digitally in degrees. set your pinion yoke to 0 degrees and weld your perches with a 6 degree tilt to it. and your shock mounts are really easy to weld on. the tubes on an explorer axle are thicker and stronger and are 31 spline instead of 28 spline that is found in the ranger 8.8
i honestly wouldn't waste my time with anything else other than an explorer rear w/ disc brakes unless i was throwing a beefed up ford 9" under.

t would be easier to swap a Level II 31-spline 8.8 with the Torsen LSD....if you could find one. No discs, but no fabrication either.

$400 for an Exploder rear?
Try another yard, Spaldings has always been a little high, but I never knew they wanted double what others did.
I located rears, both conventional and LS at Webers in Yakima for $195.

yeah, they wanted 400. i don't know how complete it was, i just knew i didn't wanna pay that for one! so i asked around, and found a complete rear caliper to caliper for $200 down in Moscow. There isn't anyway i'd drive to yakima for one hahaha. thats like 5 hrs away from me, one way when i'm at home.
