i don't think truck was off roaded i looked at skid plates before i bought it not even scratched up. the truck has a dent and a cracked grill on the drivers side right on the headlight erea, right ware the wires for the abs goes. like maybe the hit a sign or small tree or something and it went over it and ripped the wires or something?? i am going to call a buddie of mine that owns a shop to see if his scanner will read tranny codes.

and no its not a gradual drop in rpms like it should be its let off gas boom down to a idel at about 800 or so rpms.

Very well could be. A buddy of mine ripped the ABS wire on his 02 F150. Apparently the wire hadn't been snapped into it's holder, and it rubbed against the tire and then one day wore through enough that it caught something and snapped. Could be the same for you if the wire was noticeable loose up into the inner fender.

As for the idle drop, something is definitely wrong there.

The scanner you'll need is one like the expensive Snap-On scanners. The ones at Auto zone do not have the capability to read Ford transmission codes.

No, because within three drive cycles the code should disappear by itself. The computer is still sensing the problem, so clearing the codes won't do much. You may be able to gain a few extra miles before the light comes on, but ultimately it'll be back on once the problem is exhibited again.

The ABS code may be in there, and if you've taken care of that problem, then clearing the codes will take care of that and you shouldn't have that light again.

Okay, then it probably hasn't had a chance to show back up or clear out, so it too will show up on the scanner.

Alright well if the ABS problem is fixed, then the light should not come back on. After three drive cycles the code should be gone too.

Mine does this same thing, its a Soilenoid problem. You will think its fixed and a couple days/weeks/ sometimes months will go by before it decides it wants to mess with you and start acting up. Have it scanned to see which one it is, then buy the part (less than $100) and if your machanically inclined at all you can fix it. Just do some looking up online or talk to a friend who knows trannys.

lol, don't look it up online. It's the most depressing thing you could ever do. There is about 89% Ford transmission hate, and 11% actual helpful tech.

yeah i looked it up online the night i bought the truck, made me almost regret me buying a auto ranger instead of stick like i really want.

ANYHOW. i am gunna get it scanned tomorow. But what do the 2 sensors do on the side of the trans?? i have the extra trans that came with the truck that has the sensors on it. also has a TC with it. the tranny has a 6month warranty.

----------

and i crawled under it today and all my wiring that i could see looked fine.

----------

and also i drove the truck maybe 4 miles or so today at speeds under 40 and the light did not come on. about a half mile after i went about 45 the light come on. And also it dosn't always bang hard shifts after the light comes on.

Yea, It is quite depressing. But, it's about 1,000 people complaining about their Ranger/Explorer out of millions of them made, so it's hard to believe they're that bad. It just sucks when it's your truck.lol.

As far as the external sensors, i'm not really sure what they are without seeing them. Does the transmission currently in the truck have the same sensors?

And okay, it seems like you have a problem at highway speeds. This is definitely related to O/D. After you take it in tomorrow, the scanner *should* say what the code is. Post the code and we'll tell you a little more about it.

What you're experiencing seems to sound like a solenoid, T/C or maybe even a pressure problem.

the trans that come with the truck come from a 01 ranger exactly like mine. the sensors look the same and are in the same location. theres one above the shifter on the trans and one on like the top of the tail shaft area

the solinoid are all internals right? there is no o/d sensor on the external part of the trans?

The sensor on the trans by the gear select sounds like a sensor to tell the computer which position the selector is in. The one on top of the tailshaft sounds like it may measure output speed or something, but I don't really know.

The solenoids are all internal, bolted to the valve body. They are accessible once you remove the trans pan and filter, although i'm not sure you can remove them without pulling the valve body.

there is a sensor above the gear selector sensor. its held in with a torx bolt. the gear slector has a bunch of wires that go into it. this on is a i think 2 or 3 wire plug.

I searched them and all i can find is of corse more hate on these trannys LOL.
