the torsen is a t-2 which has a 2.2:1 ratio... i think a t-2r is a 3:1 ratio but costs a lot...

find a explorer or fx4 axle 28 spline or 31 (with torsen) and if it's a 28 then just get a diff kit for 125-150 and go for a 3:1 or greater bias. you will be a happy camper unlike if you weld your spider gear.

Just coming from experience, ie 2 years in snow and ice in Montana, you really don't need a fully locked rear axle in the snow. I know you can make the argument I have 4wd, but I hardly ever used it other then getting stopped on steep inclines, getting out of tight areas etc. All you really need is the L/S rear end.

As for swapping in the expo rearend I know you have to relocate the stock leaf spring mounts. I don't know what else. Search it and I'm sure you'll find it here.

spools are like welding your rear diff but no welds and they connect both axle shafts togther so that both tires spin at the same time and they both get full power.

Still, on the street, anything that doesn't provide SOME slip risks breaking axles, and makes the handling slightly unsafe.

You won't get anything for $45, 'cause it'll cost almost that just to replace the diff fluid and re-seal it the right way. If you want more traction for $45, go buy some sand bags.

I can back this up; I lived in Montana from '06 to '09 and my rig got around fine with 4X4 (hardly ever used 4 Low) and we plowed quite a bit during the winter...

Before moving to the Treasure State, I was in Conifer, Colo., for two years, where we had way more snow than in Helena; again, stock 4X4 drivetrain was fine up there.

I agree with post on sandbags; if you only have 45 bucks and limited rear-end knowledge, some weight is probably your best bet.

I take it you lived in Helena too? I was up in Havre.
