Alright I need some help. I have no clue what size differential I have. How would I measure it? and like. How would I get the better one for my 31" tires? How much would it cost? What are the benefits? Ect..

Why not just look for ones that fit your truck?
What exactly are you looking for? A limited slip?

Being a 3.0 2wd I'm betting you have a 7.5". As far as gearing check the driver's door for the production label or check the tag on the differential itself.

Yes the axle code will tell for sure what you have.

if ya wanna run 31's and aren't heavy on the pedal you'd get by with 7.5 fine. but if ya really wanna run much bigger than that i'd say just jump up and buy an 8.8 either ranger(28 spline) or explorer (31 spline). but its pretty cheap to find one, i got my explorer rear with disc brakes(complete caliper to caliper) for 200. the explorer rears just need ya to flip the leaf spring perches and weld em at 6 degrees for the pinion angle. the 8.8 is TONS stronger than the 7.5... but if ya aren't having problems it ain't worth it, IMO

thats a GEAR RATIO problem... not a problem with the strength of the axle. depending on the motor you should've had at least 4.10 in the rear. i've got a 4.0L with 31's and i'm getting 20mpg consistenly with 3.73 gears in a 8.8. techinically i SHOULD be running those 31's on 4.10 but i'm gonna be changin to 35 or 37 tire soon and will change my gear ratio accordingly(like 4.88 or 5.13) to the change in tire size so my MPG's don't tank.

OH, i almost forgot, there are A LOT more upgrades you can do to a 8.8... strength wise, gear ratio options, lockers, and brakes(bigger drums or disc).

I know it was a gear issue

Thats why instead of just throwing in 4.10's into the 7.5 I got me a Level II 8.8 with 4.10's

Gonna be doing a mustang disc swap in the future
