Default Pinion Seal

Just changed the pinion seal on my 2000 Ranger ... I have owned several Rangers and never had to change one although looking at the rear ends of other Rangers going down the road , some look to be leaking ... My question is should I have removed the plastic "dust shield" piece that is on the yoke ?? ... Reason being the dang thing is still leaking ... I looked at the yoke and it felt smooth and I purchased a good seal ... Thanks

no the dust sheild needs to stay there hench its name, its there to serve its purpose. More than likely you didnt get a good proper seal or got another tear. Actually the first time I did mine it leaked about a week later. Good tip is to put vasoline on the inside lip so it doesnt rub n tear, and some rtv on the outside lip for extra sealing. Again your prolly just going to have to redo it, but then you get into the huge issue of whether to change your crush sleeve, especially beens its already beens done once etc, etc. may the rants begin lol.

What all did you exactly do?

Thanks for the quick reply ... Well ... After test driving it a couple of times wiping a small amount of drool off it , then after the third nice road trip it is not leaking at all ... I guess I didn't clean the oil out of the dust sheild and the reminants is what was leaking ... (started to get dark on me) ... I lubed the yoke up with a small amount of gear oil as well so that may have played a part with the small drool ... Yeah ... I figured the plastic shield was there to stay and it really went together nicely ... Thanks again bro ... Regards
