Default factory lsd question

my axle code is R7 so it's a 4.10 lsd.
my question is, what is the bias ratio?

most stock lsd are <2.00 : 1 and are not that noticable... my friends celica has one and isnt noticeable at all and my friend with a ranger same setup except has an open diff and its obvious between his and mine.

I've got nothing either -- Always worked with the 2:1 ratio as typical in the OEM friction-disk LSDs (like Ford's track lock), but I've got nothing to back that up.

You can get a bit more (3:1 or so, I've heard as high as 3.5:1) by running a stiffer 'S' spring and the carbon clutch sets (as from the Mustang Cobra), if that's what you're looking for -- about $120 for the 'rebuild kit' to pack your current 8.8 LSD a bit better...

... I repacked my 8.8 with the carbon discs, but I'm still haunting yards for a Torsen 2TR.

Not all are torsen some are trak loks the torsen is an option...

No, beginning in 02 they were all torsen's in the ranger..

Really? Everythingi read said they started torsen ls in 02 nothing said it was inclusive.

i have an 03 fx4. so 02 fx4 and 03+ level II have torsen for sure... how would i find out what i have specifically... could you option a torsen on a fx4 non level II?

You could measure the axletubes over 3" is a 31spline and will have the torsen

That depends on the year. The Torsen was available as a standalone option only on the 2008~2009 FX4 - this was after the Level II designation had been discontinued in the U.S.

I thought you could get an option of a torsen on a non fx4 lvl ii I swear mines a torsen stock according to the sticker

In 2005, the Torsen was Level II only. The Torsen 4.10 and the Traction Lok 4.10 use same "R7" axle code on the Certification Label.

besides the r7 code are there anymore codes besides on the axel itself that would say so? i jus wonder... mines definetly the 28 spline with trac lock

Your 2003 FX4 Off Road came from the factory with a Traction Lok, not a Torsen.

My 2003 Torsen axle ID tag reads:
N313L
4L10 88 3E15


There is also another tag that reads:
75W140 SYNTH
OIL ONLY


The second tag is a dead giveaway because, on Rangers, only the Torsens specify 75W140 synthetic lube.

If you want another way to verify which axle it is, here's an easy check that can be done without referring to axle tags or markings. Go out and measure the diameter of the axle tube near the u-bolts. A Level II axle is about 3 1/4" and a non-LII is something like 3" or maybe a little less.

If you don't have a caliper or micrometer handy to measure the diameter, wrap a string around and mark the circumference. Then transfer the string measurement to a tape or rule.

A 31-spline/Torsen should be about 10 1/4"
A 28-spline should be significantly less, maybe about 9 ~ 9 3/4"
