in my 99 4.0 auto i drove the truck two days ago it done fine i went to drive it today and no reverse. it acts like it wants to go but it dont. all the other gears are fine. could it be something in the valve body sticking

maybe you have a burned out clutch pack had the same prob on a 90yota the 16yrold i bought it from took it muddin and got stuck and from D to R so much he just cooked the clutch pack when i bought the truck trans fluid looked good on the dipstick but after dropping the pan i found parts of the pack on the mags in the pan
