Default Noise from Manual Trans in FX4 4.0L

When driving I get a noise that sounds like it's coming from the transmission...up through the shifter boot. Best way to describe it is putting some ball bearings in a glass jar and running it in a circular motion so they roll around the sides of the jar...if that makes any sense. It's worse in 2nd and 4th gear but still present in 1st, 3rd, and 5th. When I'm driving down the road if I have the truck in say...3rd gear...it makes the sound with the clutch depressed and when it's being pushed in. If I put it in neutral while moving the sound stops. When in gear it makes the sound until I come to a complete stop even with the clutch pushed in or released. I'm going to have the truck looked at either way but does anyone have an idea as to what it could possibly be? Trying to find out how much I'm going to end up spending. Thanks once again. I appreciate the help!

I'm guessing on this, possibly the throw out bearing

If it is the throw-out bearing you want it fixed soon. Unfortunately it would be a good time to replace several clutch related items while things are apart..slave cylinder for example...flywheel resurfacing or replacement..even the clutch itself. If all that was done you could be looking at the best part of 1,000 bucks. Sorry..hopefully you know a good repair shop that you trust and whom appreciate return customers..that can make quite a difference.

Probably not the throw out bearing. The throw out bearing is still spinning even when in neutral. If the sound stops while in neutral then that is most likely not the problem. The sound you described to me sounds like a mechanical mesh grinding. Probably something to do with the syhncros. Maybe just a fluid change is in order...? When was the last time it was changed? if at all...?

The sound can still be heard when the truck is in neutral and the clutch is released. When the clutch is pushed in and the truck is in neutral it stops.

I have the same problem in my manual 2WD 3.0L, except mine's noisiest in 1st and 2nd, pretty faint in 3rd, and I can't hear it in 4th and 5th.

I changed my transmission fluid yesterday. It came out pretty nasty with metal shavings and all, but the noise was still there when I drove it today.
