Unhappy 4wd will not work

hey i have a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 and when i went to engage 4X4 high nothing happened, its not a manual transfer case, shift on the fly, 4X4 low does not work either, the dashboard lights don't come on or anything happens. If any one has any ideas it would be a great help

I had a similiar problem with my '01. My problem was the entire wire harness that connects under the driver's side seat (underneath the truck) was corroded and therefore no power to the 4x4 shift motor and no 4wd hi/lo. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, because this repair was not cheap.
