Default Transmission Fluid

As I just replaced the clutch in my 94 Ranger 2.3L manual, I managed to spill some oil out of the transmission in the process. I went out and bought the plug for the output shaft trying to think ahead and ended up spilling it out through the speedo cable hole. LOL. Anyway the oil that spilled out of it turned out to be gear oil.??? I had the transmission installed new in 2005 at a local shop. The transmission label is dated Sept. 2001.

Anyway all the info I could find says use mercon (DexronIII/M). I'm not sure if I should go ahead and drain it and refill it with mercon, or refill it with something like Red Line MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil. Would anyone know if refilling it with gear oil is ok. Any input would be appreciated.

First I called the shop that installed the transmission and was told that synthetic 5w30 motor oil was used. Something to note I haven't had any transmission problems to date.

I called the local ford dealership and was informed that there was a service bulletin that if there were "roll over noise"( not sure what that is ) to run 30 weight motor oil in the transmission in the summer months and then revert back to ATF in the winter. But if roll over noise were a problem just run 30w. Unfortunatly he couldn't remember what the viscosity of Mercon V was so he was unable to tell me exactly what 30w oil to use. He did however say that he thought that 5w30 was too thin in the winter months ( 5w at 0 deg).

Does anyone have knowledge of the viscosity of Mercon V. Or at least what weight motor oil would be safe to run year round?

I think it is a 20w

cause we use it for hydraulic oil at work sometimes

Thanks,

My thoughts are then that since Mercon V is ~20w, and then taking into account that 5w may be too thin in the winter months that taking the middle road would be safe such as 10w30 synthetic. Does this sound reasonable?

If you live in Texas why u worried about the winter months. It gets what 50 degrees there?

Just get the motorcraft fluid and call it a day
