Default Rear End Gear Quetions....

Trying to help a Good Friend out that has a Gold Wing Trike equipped with a Ford Ranger Rear End, (Narrowed by the Looks of it.) and It has had a Multitude of problems as of late, and after replacing All the Bearings and Both axle seals, I Need all the Specs on this rear End. It Supposedly is out of a 91, or a 92 Ranger, looks to be a 7.5 with I Think, (Trying to Remember at the Moment) a 2:73 Gear. Is there a Place here I can get All my Needed Specs Here, or? Carrier Clamp Torque, Back Lash Etc.
I Will check back in a Bit, as I Have To Run Right Now. any Help Is GREATLY Appreciated here People. THANKS in Advance!!!

had no results with "google"... I had a '83 GT stang with 7.5 I tore the rear diff' out drag racing, I replaced with and OEM ford motor sports 7.5 internals out of an '85 GT. without any specs, just threw it in and tightened it down. continued to drag race it for 3 yrs. (maybe I got lucky IDK) that was many yrs ago...

Some of the Gear Set values will vary slightly by ring/pinion manufacturer (typically, the max backlash spec will be opened-up to about 0.015" for Richmond and Yukon), but here's some data for ya:

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS 7.5" (Ford Racing)
  • Driveshaft flange bolts 70-95 lb-ft with loctite
  • Filler Plug 15-30 lb-ft
  • Minimum torque required to tighten pinion flange nut to obtain correct pinion bearing preload 140 lb-ft
  • Differential ring gear bolts 70-84 lb-ft
  • Differential pinion shaft lock bolt 15-30 lb-ft
  • Differential bearing cap bolts 76-89 lb-ft
  • Differential housing cover bolts 28-38 lb-ft


GEAR SET SPECIFICATIONS 7.5" (Ford Racing)
  • Backlash 0.203 mm-0.381 mm (0.008 in-0.012 in)
  • Differential case maximum runout 0.076 mm (0.003 in)
  • Pinion bearing preload (used pinion bearings) 0.9-1.5 Nm (8-14 lb-in)
  • Pinion bearing preload (new pinion bearings) 1.8-3.3 Nm (16-28 lb-in)


The 7.5 is a nice rear for triking a GL1500, as the 2.73:1 is a popular choice. Some of the kits did have issues with weld-shrinking the tubes leading to odd wearing issues with the side gears and shaft-splines.

THANKS for The Replies People! I'm JUST Getting Back in, and Sorta Had to Wing it this afternoon. I Went with .008 Backlash, 22 lb-ft Shaft Lock Bolt, Diff. Bearing cap Bolts, 58-60 lb-ft,
