Default tranny fluid....

this is my first ranger i have ever owned and is also the first manual transmission i have ever had. but it is a 1984 ranger 4x4 4 speed manual. I was just curious as to what kind of transmission fluid to use and what kind of gear oil to use in the front and rear end. if someone could help with that i would appreciate it. thanks in advance

I use Royal Purple Syncromesh tranny fluid it the 5-speed, and AmsOil HD L/S gear oil in the axle. And Royal Purple 5W20 in the motor.

MotorCraft is good, but there are better options on the fluids. They cost quite a bit more too though, so unless you like spending $8-$12 a quart, stick to the Motorcraft ATF.

I'm using Royal purple in all my fluids. Good stuff. Love it.

Determine what trans you have first. IIRC, only the M5OD-R1 manual transmission takes automatic transmission fluid. The FM and TK trans take gear oil.

There are alot of great brands for gear oil/auto fluid. I would recommend like psyco said, you check with the dealer on the specifications for your tranny and make your decision from there. Royal is good stuff but if you just drive your car it is just overkill. Like wanting to get drunk and have a good time but only drinking Dom Perignon. The Motorcraft stuff will suffice IMHO. Another thought for you if you are going to change the oil I assume it is because it is close to the recommended time frame I would also change the tranny filter if applicable to your trans. G/L

You think the M5OD-R1 would accept the royal purple syncromax manual tranmission fluid?
