Default What transmission lubricant do I use?

The transmission has F17A on it. I know that there is a mazda tranny that only uses Mercol. I thought that what I drained out was gear oil but there was so little that it could have been ATF cooked down. I have a 92 4 liter 4X4.
All help will be appreciated.

put gear oil in. 3 quarts. I run 75w-90. I was thinking about syncromesh, but it felt "thin" but I imagine it is about the same viscosity as the ATF so probably would be ok to run

you should have a M5OD.........it does take mercon.........they have a common issue with these plugs on the rail...... http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...aintenance.htm fix the plugs and add a little more than 3 quarts of mercon and hope you are ok........

Stay away from the ATF, its a gear box for CHR*ST sakes!!!!

Would you put ATF in your differential....?

the manual trans behind a 4.0 calls for atf. gear oil will only cause more problems in them. refer to your owners manual and use what's recommended.

It will push the gear oil out the over flow. it's to thick, it piles up on the splash side... throwing the lubricant away from the rotating parts, it being thicker takes more longer to return. logic vs. science

I always suggest never to use gear oil. To many horror stories. It's your truck. Do what you want. I will stick with Fords recomedations

Ford recomends gear oil for the F series, and that to has the M5OD just a little bigger, so whats the difference, why can one run gear oil and the other not, just because its a light duty truck is all.

And gear oil is not that thick, its not like running honey, the 75-90 is actually very thin.

Why would you run hydrolic fluid in a gear box....? that makes no sense what so ever, just because it is recomended by ford does not mean it is the best thing for it.

If nothing else you should run syncromesh in it, that is very thin similar to ATF in viscosity

But yeah, its your tuck run what you will, but common sense says that you run gear oil in a gear box.

Hydraulic fluid is NOT gear oil. ATF and gear oil serve the same purpose: prevent metal-metal contact. The difference is how they perform at temperature and pressure. ATF is meant for higher temperatures and pressures than gear oil.

And for the record, Ford calls for Mercon or Mercon V(depending on the year) in the M5OD-R2 . Many manual gear boxes use ATF.

For what it's worth, my manual calls for Mercon ATF in the Ranger. MTF, which is basically motor oil with special additives, in my CR-V. Can't remember the exact viscosity though but it's listed in my manual to use motor oil as an emergency fluid.

Well I was surprised in our computers at work when it said to use 10w-30 in an early 90's civic.

That might be it.

When I had a 1982 Toyota Celica, it used gear oil. I think it was the same for the Nissan Truck I had too, 1988 vintage I believe.
