Default '03 Ford Ranger 4X4 5 speed....How fast to tow?

Have an '03 Ford Ranger 4X4 5 speed and have been towing behind our motor home. The manual says to not exceed 55 mph. Is there a real reason not to do so or just someone's opinion at Ford? I don't see the difference in towing the Ranger 4 wheels down than running the truck via the engine. It is pretty hard to maintain 55 mph downhill in all locations without getting run over.

Hopefully someone here will have the technical knowledge to explain. I am not wanting to run fast, just would like to run 60 to 65 sometimes.

Maybe it has something to do with the 4wd? is the diff always turning on those like my expedition?

I would think you should be fine as long as the trans is in nuetral.

Yes, the differentials are turning. Ford only says to leave the 4/2wd switch in the 2wd position, put the transmission in neutral, and of course insert a key and turn to the 1st position so the front wheels are able to turn on the corners.

The only thing I can think of is because that shaft turns, even tho the trans case is not "engaged" it still turning the internals.

I dont think that would hinder you going 60/65. But maybe that is why they say that.

Should look up a ranger with lockouts and see what the tow speeds are...?
