Default Gear swap keep posi?

Hey guys, sometime I might be getting some 4.10 gears to replace my 3.73. Well the thing is that I want 4.10s so I can get my mpgs back, but right now with my 3.73 gears I have posi rear end. Will changing the gears make me lose my posi or is the posi in the whole rear axle?
Thanks,
P@

lol, its not posi, its l/s.

you can change gears and keep the limited slip, but that shit costs. Its cheaper to go get a used l/s rearend with 4.10s than it is to regear unless you know how to do it yourself.

I might bebuying the gears from someone and I bet for pretty cheap to. So by putting the new gears in I will still have my limited slip? I won't be swapping if It goes 1 wheel drive haha

Well unless I am missing something, its not very difficult. I have done them before. You just pull out the carrier which has the spider gears and the S spring w/ clutches. Take of the 3.73 ring and bolt on the 4.10 ring. Take out the pinion gear and put the new one in. You might have to shim the pinion in or out, but plasty gauge works well, this way you can put it on and spin the gears to see how its hitting,

heres a pic of the carrier with the ring gear. and the S spring that is the L/S

There is a clutch pack there that kicks out the 1 spider gear to lock it in.

The biggest thing is getting pinion gear depth correct. A good trick is to hone out the old large pinion bearing until it is a slip fit on the pinion shaft. This allows you to change shims between the pinion gear head and bearing to get the depth correct without having to press the bearing off each time. It's good practice to replace bearings anyway, as preload on a tapered roller bearing is critical. Once you get pinion gear depth correct, setting ring gear backlash is chimp easy. All you need is about .008" backlash. I always set it up by feel. After you do several thousand over thirty or so years, you kinda get used to it. lol In fact, on the old race car, I used to set backlash up at zero and just let it wear in. But that's not a street vehicle. Just use the gear paint to establish a good gear pattern and you'll be fine. If any of this is greek to you, then pay somebody to do it.
