Default 2.3 trans to 4.0 engine

so i hit up pick & pull today and for the love of EVERYTHING holy, there were NO 4x4 4.0 manual transmissions ANYWHERE. no rangers, exploders, mazdas, NOTHIN!!..... SO, picked up a 2.3 m50d-r1 out of a 97 ranger (same year as mine). now if i understand correctly, all i have to do is switch the tail shaft and housing to accept the transfer case and it should bolt right up.......right?

no. the 4.0 doesn't share trans with any other ranger engine except a 2.9. and then, the 2.9 trans is weaker than a 4.0.

the bell housings should swap, however you can't just unbolt the tail shaft and put yours on, I think the output shafts are different lengths, youd have to strip it down and swap parts to make it work.

Transmission

For the most part, no transmissions will swap over to the 4.0, how ever there are some exceptsion. A4LD’s have removable bellhousings so if you have an A4LD with your old engine, it may be possible to just swap the bellhousing, and be able to use the same transmission. Also, the 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern, so its possible to use the transmission from a 2.9 on a 4.0. However, this really isnt recommended. The 2.9 transmission will have different gear ration, and probably wont stand up to as much power or torque as one designed for the 4.0.

Something else to remember, if using an automatic transmission, dont forget to grab the transmission kickdown cable, as it may be different from what is currently in your truck.

If you have a manual transmission, then your pretty much out of luck. The manual transmissions used in Rangers have non-removable bellhousings, so only 2.9 or 4.0 specific manual transmissions will bolt onto a 4.0. Once again, the use of a 2.9 transmission is possible, but not really recommened.

x2 on the auto trans. I did this n a 93 2.3, had a trans from the 4.0 I got my lift out of. Swap bell housings and went right in.

However since the 4.0 was 4wd, I had a hi/lo 2wd 2.3! I didnt hook the linkage up tho.

When doing this it is recomended to have a shop do it, I guess (this is hear say) that the bell housings are machined for that trans, and swapping housings can cause damage to the torque converter....? IDK. It worked on mine. But I promptly sold it so I dont know if it held up or not!

well the bellhousings won't swap over on mine because they are cast, can't change em and the starter for the 2.3 is on the passenger side, not driver side like the 4.0..... messed with the trans today and got it outta the truck, gonna pull the top off and take a look inside and HOPEFULLY, it's not THAT bad and maybe it's just a shift fork gone bad...... wondering if i can use the shift fork from the 2.3 trans in the 4.0 trans..... hmmmmmm??? and i've got a shop to do it in, my uncle and i have a hot rod shop in san jose, so i'm doing all the work there (keeps labor down lol) but i'll keep on keepin on and see what happens....

are you talking about the line TO the slave cylinder or the cylinder itself? and what kind of transmission? what year? mine has a nylon sleeve that you have to push in to release the fingers holding the line in place to release it. not sure about yours as we dont have any more info.
