dana 44 question
Found a 78 ford pick up with a dana 44 in good shape, its a drum axle, so I would have to swap discs onto it but is it the right width to swap into my ranger? He wants 100 bucks for it!

nope its a full width. and even though it sounds like a great deal, youll probably be better off re-building it if you got it

Re: dana 44 question
I appretiate that, so for my options I can pull a 44 off an 80s wagoneer or an eary bronco. Any other options? I don't want a 30 or 35

yes, mine is out of an early bronco. and im almost positive the last few years that jeep made the cherokee, it had a d44 front axle. and good choice staying away from the 30

If its from a 78 then it would have disk brakes, so its either not a 78 or someone in a drunken stuper swapped drums onto it. It would also be Fullwidth so around 5-6" wider then your stock setup.

Grand Wagoneers had D44 fronts (80-91ish were Driversdrop which would work for a ranger SAS), the Cherokee (XJ) has never had a factory D44 front axle.

100%. XJ's never had a D44 front axle. Certain XJ's got a D44 rear axle, instead of the D35. But that was only certain year's that had the tow package.

Re: dana 44 question
14 bolt? who makes it and why is it better?
ps most all racecars (including NASCAR) use a 9 inch based rear end or a quick change that is based off of a 9 inch.

GM 14bolt, 10.5" Ring gear, Full float, 1.5" 30 spline shafts, 1.59" Pinion diameter.
Dana 70, 10.5" Ring gear, Full Float, 1.5" 35 spline shafts (23,32 spline also), 1.75 Pinion diameter.
Ford 9", 9" ring gear, Semifloat, 1.3" 31 spline shafts, 1.31 Pinion Diameter.
Both the 14bolt and the 9" have a 3rd pinion bearing for support.
Dont take this the wrong way, but just cause NASCAR uses it doesnt mean its the best axle ever. It has its positives and negatives but in the end its still a 1/2 ton axle. A 14 bolt is a 1 ton FF axle. They arent even in the same class. the major driver for a 9" rear is weight. a 14 bolt weighs in at 525-550lbs. Its a big mother.

Re: dana 44 question
D60 FTW in my opinion. Got FF shafts 3/4 ton and a ton lighter than a D70 or Corp 14 bolt

Its not a ton lighter. Its marginally lighter but the shafts suck. For the price of a D70 or 14bolt the D60 is a waste.

Re: dana 44 question
i see. but a 1 ton axle wont fit under a ranger. it will be a several inches wider than stock and be a bit heavy.
ps. some 9 inches are full floating. mainly the ones used for racing. the reason i said use a 9 inch is because there is almost any ratio readily available and it is plenty strong for a ranger even if it has a v8
