Default 4.56 gears?

I got an 03 4x4. What does it take to put 4.56 gears in it. Is it easier to jus gget the gears outta a expo of the same yr or shuld i look for a whole axel w/ disc brakes? Also does doing the whole axel route rrequire modding? I feel jus gettin the gears would be easier.. what about the front end also???

It would be nice to just get the whole axle and swap it in very little every work, as for the gears if you get used you still need to get the rebuild kit so you have the shims and such. Personally I like buying new gears and a full axle rebuild kit that way I know the gears are good and I know the whole axle has been gone through.

Edit- as for the front you need to drop the chunk out and get new gears and such for it. If you havent worked on a IFS gears beofre they can be a pain at times.

hey pretty much what he said. the rear isnt to bad providing you can get a spare rear or take plenty of time on yours to learn n do it yourself. but can be donewith eough time n patience. now like he said the front d35 your going to hvw to drop out n the process is alil different then the rear specially depending of your rear is an ls, ford track lok, locker, w.e. i plan on learning the rear myself but with what you want to do, it sounds like you cant do them yourself so your best bet is to buy new 4.56's n master install kit n have someone do it for you. now that wont be cheap, n the chances of you finding a rear with 4.56 already in r slim n especially for the front your not going to find already done. so if u cant learn or do it yourself, thats really your only option. but goodluck with that bill unlessyou know people. hope it works out for u.

EDIT: sorry my post is going to end up being alil long but I decided to come back and add somemore. Im actually doing something similar, I just picked up a low mileage set of 4.10s for cheap, and even though my truck only has 60,000 miles my stock 4.10's, im thinking about building a 31 spline with discs, learn to do gears myself and set it up and beens I wont have to tear apart my dd to do it, I should have plenty of time to learn myself. My newest thread is on this topic.

But on to your questions, it won't be easier to get the gears out of an expo because they dont come stock with 4.56's. It depends on what you want, I take it you have the 28 spline 8.8 in the rear and you could just have them installed in your stock one and do the mustang disc conversion, but your truck will be down for alil while to do this, or your going to pay an arm and a leg for them. Also what size tires are you going where you really need 4.56's, if your moving up to 35's I would upgrade to the 31 spline just to be safe but thats just me. Now if you choose to get an expo rear you get the luxury of discs but the spring perches will need to be cut from the bottom and rewelded on top for your truck and then you still ahve to figure out what to do about your gears and such, so thats alot of work if you cant do it yourself. You can get a ranger 31 spline, and not have to worry about remounting the spring perches but its going to be drums and you can't do the mustang swap because that only works for 28 splines, and then you still have to worry about the whole gear thing. So unless you can do the work yourself, either way its going to be kind of a pain. IF I WAS YOU, and you weren't going to 35's, I would keep your stock 28 spline, have the 4.56's installed with a new master install kit, and then do the mustang disc swap. If you are going up to 35's or just want the stronger axle, then your going to have to deal with the above situation.

NOW for the front you will just need to install 4.56's in it, but again the whole axle will need to be dropped in order to do this, and I would buy new master install kit as well. Back to if you can't do the work yourself, this is going to be kinda spendy.

So like everything else it really depends on what route your going with your truck, if your staying down with 33's and not going with huge tires. If you offroad or just street queen it around, and how much work you can do yourself and what are the things you are wanting to be accomplished. Sorry for the long post but I figured you would want to know all the info to give the best decsion. Like I said im dealing with the same thing as you right now just different gear ratio and I only will need to do the rear, which I am going to do myself and learn. So any other questions you can email me or write back on here. But emailiing would be easier to get ahold of me. good luck, Zach.

you will have a very hard time finding a front and rear axle with 4:56's already in it. there were very few trucks made with that gear ratio and i believe they were Canadian model FX4's so swapping them in yourself might be your only option.

Holy wow. Haha my head's spinnin w/ info now.. thanks guys! In my sig it says wat i have my axel code is R7, which is the 8.8 w/ LS 4.10 gearing. Im 99% sure its 31 spline already but correct me if im wrong. I currently am running 33x12.5" tires. Someday i'd like to save up for a superlift kkit and put on 35's. Regearin as of now practly sounds impossible for me

no your not the 31 spline, your only the 28 spline. and not impossible, just expensive to do if you cant do the work yourself or know people.

EDIT: the only rangers that come stock with the 31 spline rearend is the 2002 FX4 and 2003-up FX4 level 2's. Even then you still are going to have drum brakes tho.

no the 8.8 axle comes in 2 forms, the formal 28 spline or upgraded 31 spline. 28 spline is supposed to hold up to a 35 so it is still a strong axle.
