Slave Cylinder Recommendation
I am replacing the slave cylinder in my '96 Ranger XLT 4.0L for the third time in 10 years. This vehicle does not get any rough driving but slaves keep failing. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable / long lasting slave cylinder? What brands should I consider? What brands should I avoid?

Re: Slave Cylinder Recommendation
Are you buying cheap ones from like autozone/advanceauto...? Maybe they havn't been bleed completly and that is causing them to fail...?
When I did my conversion on my truck I bought one from Ford. I havn't had any problems, but I only have about 12K on the trans. Also, I had to bleed it with an electric pump while working the pedal, it was a PITA and took about 2 hours to get all the air out....

Re: Slave Cylinder Recommendation
I just replace the slave on my 96 2wd 4.0L. Bought one from autozone for $55 and they have lifetime warranty. I guess this is meaningless if the slave is a POS. They just replace your cheap part with another cheap part. I hope it's not a POS, I don't want to replace this ever again.

Re: Slave Cylinder Recommendation
Unfortunately, although it might be better than an AZ cheapie, a slave sourced from Ford is not as good as it should be. I bought my 2003 new and the factory-installed slave failed without warning at 17,000 on the odo. Sooner or later, if you drive a manual Ranger, this is to be expected. That's the sad truth and this weak point of the Ranger/Explorer/Bronco/F-series has remained unaddressed for decades.

Re: Slave Cylinder Recommendation
Slave cylinders can be a pain. A lot of them are reconditioned and if this process is not done right or with the correct rubber bushings, they will fail promptly. Autozone will keep replacing them after you buy one from them, but you are stuck with the labor. I agree with many on this post, for this part, buy from Ford.
