| | "Clunk" noise under normal acceleration
So my dad has owned this truck for about 5 years now, and since day one, it has made a weird clunk noise under normal acceleration from a stop. It will only do it one time, but it does it at every stop. My dad thinks its the u-joints, but i was thinking something might have gone wrong after 5+ years of this happening. Does anyone else have this problem? What other things could this be? Thanks for any info. 2000 ranger xlt, 4.0 v6.

Auto or stick? Does it do it as soon as you start accelerating or when it shifts? If it's done this since brand new why wasn't it taken care of?

Automatic. Does it as soon as it starts accelerating. Did not buy the truck brand new, and my dad has the "not broken, dont fix it" mentallity.

If your still wondering about this damn near 7 months later....I had this problem. And I found somewhere online that that the splines in the drive shaft didn't have enough grease on them. Some people said you had to take it in but this article I found simply explained how to drill a hole, tap it with a 1/4 28 tap, and install a grease fitting. Then I greased it and it helped big time.
Does it feel like its coming from the transmission? Hell maybe you got it fixed by now.

Grease the slip yoke on the rear of the drive axle. You have to cut the boot and grease. I'll try to find the write up for you. Check back.
dead thread. sorry.

Mine's a 97 2wd 5-spd and it clunks only when letting off the clutch from a stop, unless I let off the clutch VERY slowly at the friction point. Any opinions on whether its more likely the U-joint or slip yoke greasing?

I have a 2000 XLT and same problem, and from what I've read, it's very common (It won't do it if you are carrying a heavy load though)
Like someone mentioned above, there is a fix, although I've never bothered to fix mine. There is an article online that shows how to fix the problem, but for the life of my I can't find it now. If I do, I'll post it

no one has mentioned trans mount or loose cross member? althought i see this looks to be common.
mine did it after tranny replacement, cross member had settled n needed re tightening. cured the clunking.
