Default The Mercon Debate

Hello,

I've been searching for weeks to the answer for my question.

I've got a 97 Ranger, 2.3l, 2WD, manual transmission.

I cannot find out whether the appropriate tranny fluid is "Mercon," "DexIII/Mercon" or "Mercon V."

The best I have been able to find out is that "Mercon" (which has been officially de-licensed by Ford) has been replaced by the more-synthetic Mercon V, and is backwards compatible. Has anyone come across this, or can shed some light? Thanks!

All the ones I looked up online also showed it as Mercon V

as far as backwards compatible You may just call ford and ask them

Hence the problem.. one dealership said, "Mercon, no Mercon V" and another said "Mercon V is fine." Well, just drove 180 miles on Mercon V and it seems juuuust fine.
