Default conversion from 2wd to 4wd

I have been looking to buy a ford ranger for quite some time now and im not willing to have a 2wd but since they are considerably cheaper than the 4wd models i was wondering if its possible to convert a 2wd to a 4wd? are the 03+ models wiring harnesses already set up for it and its just plug and play or would i have to tap into the harness? if i were to get an edge model would the front end prettty much just swap out and throw in the transfer case and then put in the wired up switch? or is it much more of an in depth and unworth it project? i understand that it is no easy task and would take quite some time to find the parts and install them but i would like to know if its even possible or economical to try to do this? any help is appreciated. thx guys.

Personally, I would think it would be cheaper and easier to just get a truck with 4X4 already in it since you don't have one yet.

A company already makes a kit for what you want to do. Its called Ford. They put them in from the factory. Save your self the time and buy a 4x4 to start.

it is possible with the Edge packages as they are the same as 4x4 model without the transfer case. HOWEVER, to do the 4x4 conversion, you may as well go ahead and spend the extra buck to go buy a factory 4x4. Because by the time you got done make a 2wd a 4x4, it may cost you more than if you went ahead and bought a 4x4 in the first place.

Also if you go ahead and buy one, you have a 4x4 that meets factory specs and works when you need it too, less chance of something messing up.

First of all, what is you price range on a Ranger? nice 4x4s can be had for a decent buck. Shoot I bought my 06 in the middle of 08 and got $3200 knocked off of the price be haggling
