The fluid level checks good? How long has it been since the last fluid change in miles?

Four years is a long time. The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles. If everyone did that, transmission shops would be out of a job. I think your tranny has a filter too. Any way, give that a shot. It's fairly cheap and it could be all that you need. The fluid might need changed more than once to clean all the old fluid out.
