Default 8.8 axle question

my dads sport trac has been making a knocking noise when yah hit a bump so we went to go find out what it was and find out that the passenger side rear axle would actually move in an out about id say between 1/4-1/2 and inch and was making a knocking sound so we go and take out the axle shafts and it looks like the passenger one has been stretched or something its going to have to be replaced because the bearing was shot and it wore a grove into it , so i was just wondering if any one has heard of the passenger axles getting warped or streched or anything like that?

Edit: its an 01 explorer sport trac with a 8.8 4:11 in it

ive never heard of them stretching but i do know that the c clips that hold the axle shafts in can wear causing excess axle end play. the axle will always be able to move in and out a little bit but if it actually moves 1/2" id be pulling the diff cover off and inspecting the c clips and side gears for excessive wear. also if the wheel bearing has worn a groove into the axle shaft you will need an axle repair bearing that will offset where the bearing rides on the shaft so it rides on the smooth part of the shaft that isnt damaged.

I agree with above. Depending on what kind of quotes you get in either parts or a shop doing the work, it might be worth looking into an axle swap from a junk yard.

Well we took it all apart and found out that the clutch pack for the locker was worn out and was in the process of coming apart on the side hooked to the passenger side so we are just gonna rplace the locker and bearings for the axle and hopefully it will all work out
