Default All time 4 wheel drive Ranger

Hi everyone,

First time poster on here, figured I'd just out right ask the question. I have just bought a 2004 Ranger FX4 Level 2. I love the thing, 4.0L, manual Tranny, 4x4, Leather seats, all the options. Its got 121K miles on it and runs perfect. Anyway, back to the real question.

I have been looking around the forum and trying to find any information about changing the transfer case out with something from a Ford Exploder or something that would allow me to have All Time 4wd. Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions on how to go about doing this? Or if it can even be done at all. I'd like to keep the 2WD option, and then be able to switch it to 4x4 and still be able to drive on the pavement.

Thanks everyone.

Whats the reason for wanting a AWD transfer case? Level II's are badass trucks to begin with, I wouldnt do anything that would take away from them.

to be completely honest with you, you'll end up going through tires/hubs/axles a lot quicker than what you would normally.

Well living in Wisconsin we sometimes get some pretty bad winters up here. I know you aren't supposed to drive on the road with the 4wd because you'll damage the transfer case or something else. I know some of the exploders came with all time 4wd and I was wondering if it was just a transfer case that would need to be swapped or if it was much more involved.

I'm curious, why would I go through "tires/hubs/axles a lot quicker than what you would normally"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the idea of the differential transfer case to not have those issues? Isn't it supposed to even the the power distribution out to something like 30/60?

This is the first truck I've owned, and the first 4wd vehicle. I want to make sure I don't do something stupid and break it.

Yes, the Lvl2's are very bad ass trucks. I love this thing. I use it to tow my friends cars when they need work done. It hauls Ford Escorts and Toyota Celicas like there is nothing back there. With the 4.10 LS gear it rocks socks. A little high for the RPM's when going down HWY 35 at 75MPH but not bad.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I just see the ability to drive with 4 wheels all the time, is an advantage over just the 2 rears. It seems to me that the lvl2 is a very awesome truck, but the AWD feature that came on some of fords other vehicles, would be a great addition to this truck. I understand your point of just leaving it alone and driving it this way, but I was more interested in just the information. Such as, has anyone done this before. Is it possible. Is it a lot of work.

If it sounds like its more work than its worth, I'd leave it alone. But if all it would require is picking up a transfer case from the junkyard out of a 01 ford exploder or something like that, and then bolting it up, I'd do that in a heart beat.

So I've got another question. I've got this "friend" with a 04 Ranger 4.0L, manual Transmission, Base model. My "friend" would like to have a full time all wheel drive ranger. What would you guys say then? Is it possible to put in an all time 4wd system into the ranger?

Thanks

Hey man ill try and put my input on this and see if it helps any. yes I would agree it would be more work than its worth especially when youd have to even be more specific wanted 2 hi, and being able to go to an awd mode and im pretty sure more would be involved than just swapping a explorer transfer case but members such as wannabe, Trepaul, and others would have to comment as far as that would go. Now ANYTHING is possible, especially with a few members on here, but with that being said its prolly not worth all that effort for that but that doesn't mean that someone won't try. It just depends on the person, and different strokes for different folks but I can understand you just wanting the info on it. As far as your friend goes, hes going to have the same chance of puttin one in that you will. there isnt to many differences between your truck and his as far as true mechanical features go, just a few things here and there. and im my honest opinion, the awd style explorer that your talking about dont work THAT great anyways in snow. My family personally has one and I have witnessed with my eyes my uncle trying to back into the garage on snow and ice and the front not wanting to engage. and if you notice all the years mid to now explorers are 2wd to 4wheel systems, not much awd. even the newer awd type things from ford and others all have a crap ton of sensors and computers in effect to determine when to turn the awd on fully, not allow slippage, and other few complaints that ive heard. Most USUALLY say they kinda wish they could just put it into 4wd and just go, not have the computer deciding what to do for them. With all that being said if you have a good set of tires, and the conditions warrent for you to put in 4x4 on the road, there will be enough slippage that it isnt going to damage 4x4 driveline. TurdFx4 was saying you will go through those parts quicker because its an awd system so all those parts are constantly being used, which with a 2wd to 4x4 system, alot of those are not as engaged when just in 2wd all the time. most awd the computer will decide when to allow the system to slip and allow easy movement for turns without it damaging much but still. it would be tight to have, but I think your best bet is to have some good AT's, and when the snow gets to bad on the road than go to 4x4. just watch your speed, remember your turning radius will be different, and just take your time and you'll be fine.

Thanks ZWilson07,

That's is kind of what I've been looking for. From what it sounds like you are saying the AWD wouldn't have the option to be 2wd? or 4wdL anymore if I went that route? I'd rather not loose those options as the 2WD is the most fun in the snow and the 4 low is really useful for hauling something out of the ditch.

your welcome, what I was meaning is there is a way to have a kind of awd and 2wd. there are some jeep transfer cases, as well as for instance the chevy silverado all have the option to go into a 4wd auto. which lets the computer decide when to fully ingage and release to not do damage to the drivetrain but also get good traction. that is one thing I liked about the silverado is just push the auto on spotty roads and let it take care of stuff, but you also have to remember its still the computer deciding when to do things which alot of people dont like. they like being in full control, so even though that aspect would be totally cool, it would be alot of work, and if its spotty and you have good tires and are properly driving, you aren't going to need your 4x4. people that have good tires and KNOW how to properly drive can get through sooooo much with just a 2wd that most wouldnt believe, driver mod is one of the most important mods out there. 4x4 is just a nice luxury of course but I would just stick with what you got and spend the time and money into other mods.

Thank you. That is what I was looking for. I'm a good driver and I know I won't have any issues. I just assumed that if I could slap on a transfer case and be done with it that would be sweet. I still don't understand the way it switches between 2 and 4wd. Either way, I'll leave the truck the way it is and look into other things. Thanks again.

It's a fully loaded lvl2 black on black with more black and some black leather inside with some black trim and more black around the windows, and I think it even has black windows, with a black roof and black hood. It's Black.

Oh and some white/rust scratches inside the bed.

I'm thinking about getting a rhino lining put it to seal that up so it wont rust out.

It's got aftermarket rims, i think, and some 33 mud terrain. They suck on the road. Feels like a got 4 little Michale J Fox's for tires. Came with 2 nice cracks in the front window.

That's really about it. I'll take some pictures of her when I get home from work. I love the truck so far. I can't wait till the winter when I'll get to take it out and have some fun with it.
