Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
ok, so in the transfer case, is it a differential? or a straight drive? I've read about some transfer cases that have a viscus fluid? What does the 04 lv2 ranger have?

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
04 is a live axle. meaning at all times, even in 2wd the front driveline is turning. the only thing that has to be engadged is the transfer case. so you can go from 2wd to 4x4hi and back at anytime with just the switch. just has to get the transfer case up to speed to connect it all in.

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
So the disconnect for the front wheels to the engine is inside the transfer case? So basically the front wheels are spinning the CV joints. The CV joints are spinning the front differential(?), and the front differential(?) is spinning the shaft to the transfer case? So when you switch to 4H or L it engages something in there so that the front drive shaft spins?

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
Yes. Whenever the tcase is shifted into 4, the power is then sent to the front axle and in-turn, the wheels. Hubs are 100% *engaged* all the time. Driving around in 2hi, your front shaft may be spinning due to residuals. Sorta similar to manual transmission gear selection where the front output on the case is basically in neutral when in 2.

yeah any more in depth specifics, wannabe can answer for you. hes put alot more time and hands on into different swaps and parts than I have, so between him and Trepaul, they can answer just about anything you would need to know.

Forgot to mention: This combined with a manual shift tcase is an absolute fail-safe 4wd system. When you shift it, you're GONNA have 4wd PERIOD. No switch failure, no shift motor failure, no 4wd module failure. But you're not after Part-time w/ low 4wd system.
There's been a few guys on other sites that have swapped in the BW4404/4405 from an AWD explorer into Rangers for hot little AWD street trucks. They're able to be street driven because they've got an internal clutch. I haven't a clue if there needs to be any shaft modifications or replacements, but I assume the flanges on both sides of the case are the same as what's on your Ranger. What I've heard is that proper operation of that clutch is quite a wiring chore because it's controlled by a computer box, but again, I've got no experience. The thing I would hate is not having LOW anymore. Personally, I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze. Maybe on a 400hp street pounder, yes, but not a DD.
Here's a good read and an awesome forum that could help. This is the site I believe folks have done the swap at... http://therangerstation.com/tech_lib...sferCases.html

hey shane is that why you and Trepaul switched to manual shift t case? are is that just him? I remember reading about what you decided to do but I can't remember at the moment, I was just curious what you decided to run.

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
That and just the badass fact of having no switch and an extra stick poking through the floor. Plus you can get in and out of low faster than a switch and get into 4hi. Mine went KABOOM last year and took a tranny out with it, so I've got a nifty switch again. lol.

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
how come you didnt just redo it again, just easier to swap in the old stuff? and so what does it take to do that setup, new transfer case and the shifter? and you and him both still have the live axle dont ya?

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
My tcase housing literally split in half. It's an unneeded expense and I didn't care to toss a super high mileage one back in. I needed a trans rebuilt($600) more than I wanted a manual shift tcase. Got a donor case to use and I've made the decision to do a complete rebuild when I put a manual back in it.
All that's needed is the case, the shifter linkage, and depending on year of case, a front shaft..........on an auto Ranger. 01+ manuals require a SUPER RARE trans tailhousing that has the threaded bungs for the linkage to bolt to. Or a fabricated bracket that I could build or my brother can build using my truck as a jig. Otherwise it's a bolt-on deal.
We're both live axle because live axle is FTW.

Re: All time 4 wheel drive Ranger
I have a manual, does that mean id have to find one of those super rare ones? and yeah they are EXCEPT when the wheel bearings go out and you have to replace the entire assembly lol

There is a planetary Gearset in the transfer case that transfers power through a chain that turns the front output when the shift fork is engaged. I have a completely disassembled Tcase at home I can snap a pic of.
