Question 4.10 swap.

What all would be needed for swapping out from stock to 4.10 gears? Would it need a new housing, or would these fit in the stock?

Cheapest option is finding stock axles(axle?) already loaded with 4.10's and just swap it in.

If you've got a 2.3, you DO NOT have an 8.8" unless you swapped one in. What's needed for the swap? If you've got over 100k on the clock, it's a good idea to fully rebuild the axle using a Master Gear Install kit that includes everything needed but outer axle seals. It's suggested to have someone who knows what they're doing do the gear swap to ensure proper gear setup so no failures because brand new gears are strong, but brittle.

hell, i'd just find a low mileage junkyard axle with 4:10's and swap it in. it'll be easier and cheaper. not too sure how prices are where you're at, but the last 3 axles i've done i got them for around $300. Flush fluids and change brakes then install on the truck and you're good to go in about 3 hours.

If you want to get real fancy, get a rear 8.8 out of a '98 + explorer(correct me if Im wrong). They have discs in the rear

No point... welding is required, axle is wider, requires new ubolts and plates, and the brakes are a whore and a half to work on. Eff that.

Just get a Ranger 8.8 and upgrade to mustang discs if you want discs... they're ALOT easier to work on and the ease of the parking brake alone is worth it and is my decision maker to ditch Expo brakes on my Ranger 31spline axle. Getting a functioning parking brake with expos is a whore for a spring over truck.

i just did the 4.10 swap into my ranger, 99 explorer axle with disc into my 1994 ranger. all you need are the u bolts and braces from the explorer along with lugs, the brake lines just plug right into the soft line with a c clip and the drive shaft had the same yolk or chuck to the driveshaft. you may want to grab the leafs from the explorer also to get clearence but you might have to weld new mounts
