Default WTF??? Really could this just fall off...

I just bought this truck, hence my first post. I am driving, hearing a clanging in the front end. I go striaght home and I remove the lug cover and this piece falls out.

Research says that maybe the snap ring is gone???

That look like the locking hub for your 4WD. If the nut that holds it on is broken or missing, yeah, it could just fall off. On my '93 I believe the nut had something to do with holding the rotor on too. So, I'd check the wheel real good. You should take a few pics of the wheel hub and stuff so that people can see what you see so they can help you out better.

The hub just snaps on. A few things can cause it. First the outer edge of the hub has plastic teeth(for lack of a better word) that snaps into a grove on the front edge of the brake rotor. The grove gets full of rust and it doesn't hold very well after a while. The next issue is the axle stub in the center of the rotor. There is supposed to be a plastic snap ring(usually orange) and a keeper (a thin metel piece that snaps in in front of the snap ring) that holds the stub in place. It can be missing and cause excessive movement. The next issue is the wheel bearing. The way its designed there is actually 2 bearings in one. One bearing is what the truck rolls on and usually makes a growling noise when its going bad. The inner bearing is for the axle stub shaft. The axle and bearing surfaces can wear out causing excessive play which can cause the hubs to work off.
