Question 98 ranger manual trans-gear oil or ATF???

I have a 98 ranger with a 4cyl 5 spd, the tranny makes a kinda whinning sound when accelerating and decelerating, i pulled the plug on the side of the tranny, and its full but its black and looks like oil. are these trannys supposed to have automatic trans fluid or gear oil, and how much??? any help would b great thx.

It requires Mercon ATF. Fill it until is starts dripping out of the fill hole. It takes 2.8 quarts.

True, Mercon ATF was the original specified fluid but Ford has since discontinued it. The substitute for Mercon ATF is Mercon V ATF.

It's up to you what you want to use. The dealer only has Mercon V, which will be just fine. Merc/Dex from an auto parts store works too.
