Angry pin slid out, tore up pinion gear

so i have a ected limited slip locker. the other day my abs and parking brake light came on. so i took it in to get the code ran. code turned up to be a bad sensor. so i by the sensor and replace it. still having same problem. so than i decide to crack open the diff and take a look. so i crack it open to find my abs sensor ring is missing teeth

the ring is the gold lookin one on the left


so i started to look around to figure out what could have happened to tear that gear up so bad. and i find....




so now i had two jacked up gears with no explanation of why? so looked around some more and found what was causing all the damage



it was the pin that holds the spider gears in. turns out the bolt that was holding that pin in place broke



so that pin was slideing out and hitting my pinnion gear. than the pieces from the pinion gear were tearing up my abs sensor gear. so now the end of that bolt is still stuck in the pin and i can even get the pin out

are you asking how to get the pin out? just pull the carrier out of the housing and drill it out

ya i was asking. bit i ended up gettin the pin all the way out and the end of the bolt fell right out. now i just gotta figure out were to get new pin and bolt

^^ And a new gearset...

My guess is that whoever installed your "LS/locker"(oxymoron) didn't take the steps to make sure that bolt didn't walk on ya and they may have way overtorqued it. It's a weak bolt and only has to be cinched in place with locktite.

Your R&P may be saved but you've gotta pull the carrier and pinion out and smooth the knicks in the pinon with a flap disc. That's only if the knicks aren't in the mesh pattern. IMO...time to re-gear the truck, eh?




Ford might stock your center pin and retaining bolt. If they dont have it locally, hit up Randy's Ring & Pinion @ RingPinion.com. They're just out of Seattle and you'll have your parts in very short order. BUT...I don't know if your carrier takes a special center bolt or retaining pin other than stock.
