i had mine replaced. also had u joints and front outputshat seal replaced. all of that cost me $325. how many miles on yours? might be a good time to do u-joints...but if theyre still good, that seal will probably last a little while longer.

The seals suck. I've replaced mine twice, and once again they are slowly leaking. Not to bad though. I just gave up, and check the fluid levels every once in a while.

Your bearing might be shot, causing it to wiggle back and forth and ruin the seal. I think I have the same problem in my 03.

yeah mines only got 59,000 miles on it and just had the u joints replaced because one went bad so that with my manual tranny hasnt helped im sure. Ive thot its been slowlllllly leaking for alil while because I always seemed to find like darker spots on the diff housing but could never actually find a wet spot you know, but dad called yesterday while I was at school saying there was oil on the driveway where id be parking n sure enough it was def wet this time. just have to keep adding gear oil til I can get it fixed. wheres a good place to get the seals and gear oil? also I think I have the jist of how to do it but does this sound right? basically do you just drain the fluid, mark the location of pinion flange and driveshaft flange. then remove driveshaft bolts and move it to the side, then mark pinion flange orientation on the housing of the diff. then mark the nut orientation on the pinion stud, and then the pinion stud orientation to the pinion flange. then measure the depth of the stud from the nut. the remove the nut and count how many turns it took to get it off, then hit the pinion flange off the pinion. then finally remove the pinion seal, install new seal, the put the flange back on making sure the mark is lined up on the diff housing. then put the nut back on and tighten the number of turns it took to get it off and lined up with the marks you made, check the depth measurement that you took earlier and if all good, then bolt driveshaft back up, refill with fluid and LS additive, and bolt the cover back up. psssh that was alot of typing but does that sound the right way of how its supposed to go??? cause I just nervous about all the talk about having to measure the bearing preload I think is what it is, and all that?? Oh and lastly whats the best way to get the old seal out, I dont have a seal puller so would a screwdriver suffice for this one?

yep looks like how mine was doing and mine seems to have got worse been I drove it yesterday, (because I didnt know it was leaking bad yet) so now its sitting in the driveway because I was going to have a guy help me so I dont have to worry as much but he magically isnt answering the phone now. but went out and bought some gear oil and the seal from oreilly's and the friction modifier from ford and picked up the claw type seal puller. can anyone comment on how I said I would do it with my above post and see if that way will work fine? or any other things to add and advice?

also I have a quick question on the pinion bearing preload. is it correct to jack in the rear up, take off the rear wheels, take off the rear drums and then get an inch/pound 1/2 drive beam style torque wrench and check the preload on the nut? also how do you take the drums off and on, and how do you check the preload, just by putting the socket on the nut and slowly turn it and see how much force it read to turn the axles? and do you turn the nut to the right or left to do this etc? just trying to get some last mintue things.
