Default How can I check if my 4wd works?

When I put my 2001 Ford Ranger in 4wd high or low the light does not come on. But the light also does not come on when I first start the ignition, which leads me to beleive the light is blown. When I drive it with the 4wd switch on it dosen't feel any differn't around corners or anything. What can I do to see if it works?????

In 4 Lo you can't drive fast at all. Also tight turns in 4 Lo is hard to do...or you can find some dirt, put it in 4 high and see if you can some spin marks with the front tires...

If you're turning on pavement in 4wd and your front tires aren't protesting, it's probably not engaging.....

If 4low was engaging you'd definitely notice the difference in gearing.

I have the same problem. i have a 92 ranger w. a 5speed and push button 4x4. when i push the button the light comes on on the dash and the counsel, but i dont feel anything that lets me know of anything engaging. since today is slick out i tried to put in 4x4 and dump the clutch and didnt see the front tires move. idk if its either a selonoid or a fuse or what.

4low definately will ride differently then 2wd but yeah why not take the advice and spin the tires in the dirt/grass and check the marks...and why not have a little fun while your at it

Hey, in my ranger when I engage 4x4 and I try to turn on the pavement it wont move hardly. Can only go forward - Does this mean that there is probally nothing wrong with it - I thought something was wrong with the front something because it looked all rusted up and my aunt never used 4x4 hardly in the 14 years that she had it.
