Exclamation Is it too late to do a tranny flush?

Hey guys, just purchased my first Ranger (2000 XLT Supercab 3.0 auto) and am loving it! Question is, at 67,500 miles, is it too late to have a tranny flush. I've read numerous reports on here about people waiting too late to have it done and wound up doing more harm than good. From what I understand from the low mileage and Carfax report, the truck was properly maintained for the beginning of its life, with the second owner having it for almost 9 years. I am very finicky about buying used vehicles and want to do a complete fluid change on all drivetrain components including a transmission flush and am weary about harming my new daily driver. I will have it done at either a local tranny shop or dealership depending on price, don't want to risk doing it myself and killing it. Anyone have a flush done around this mileage with good results or should I stick to a basic filter and fluid change? Also, if available, would going back with synthetic fluid have any positive gains, as I will be going with syn in the engine and rear end.

I had mine done shortly after I bought my truck, I did all the fluids just to be sure. I don't think it will harm anything, it's regular maintenance for the trucks anyway. I had a shop do it for me where I work cause they hook me up and my seal was leaking anyway. I just had regulare fluid put it, no synthetic.

It depends on what the fluid looks like IMO. If it's still red or redish then go for it, but if it's black leave it alone. There is a lot of debate on this. I'm just going off of what I have learned from working on heavy duty transmissions, and from the old timers that have 20+ years of experience.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'll give the fluid a look. From what I understand, the truck was serviced regularly so there shouldn't be any burnt fluid (fingers crossed).

I have 105000 miles on my 02 Ranger.I understand it was the First year an American company(Ford) built an Electronic controlled Five Speed Automatic(4R55R?)or? Anyway I had the Dealer Flush at 30000 miles or so then another,Can't find receipt and didn't record it in my maint log!NO No! Still after 70000 miles had this Tranny Firmness/O/D light off Flashing! Was ready for Overhaul ,etc. :Worse Case Scenario! My Bro-In -Law worked Ford dealerships 20 years. Now He's College Tech instructor, and they have a Ford Rep in class too!He suggested I might have a valve sticking in Trans? Did the simple Pan&Filter drain. No more problem after 120 miles or so! I know it can still go! I'm not getting any healthier ,nor my Ranger! In my opinion ,with My Ranger it worked for me!Bro-in-law said tho after I asked No Synthetic now!Too late to add that now!,according to him.I've been following his advice many years. He's pretty Daggone Good!

Well guys, didn't do the flush. Had the local dealership do a filter and fluid change with a service coupon and got a good deal. So far, so good. Thanks for the help!

After ALL my research here and elsewhere, plus family advice,I cannot emphasize enough,How A Tranny rebuild/replacement,would have ,and did cause me SEVERE Panic Anxiety! The relief I got from a simple ATF&filter drain, can only be said as you put it:So,I can joke about it now:There was a guy sitting on an upper floor office, with the window open.A guy jumps off an upper floor window or roof and passes by the opened guys window. The guy inside asks him: "Hows It Going"? The swiftly passerby says: "So Far So Good"! I feel a potentially financially devastating event was avoided, maybe only Temporarily,But:"So Far,So Good"! Good Luck To you too!

P.S.,I should say if I didn't ?,I had no slippage and the Fluid was lookin good,no burnt smell, etc. It did have a very small amount of sludge in the bottom of the pan.Except for a metal magnet" or little tiny round cylindrical shaped metal piece from the original gasket holes. Not a shaving or any metal whatsoever on magnet in pan! 10-4!Good Buddies!
